At present the @GamRegGB & local authorities have a statutory duty to aim to permit a harmful industry. A new Gambling Act based on the prevention of harm is needed urgently to protect the public from the gambling industry's exploitative practices & products.
'We have a duty to protect people from gambling harm' Minister for Gambling policy @StuartAndrew busts some myths on financial risk checks and explains how the new system will create a safer experience online Watch 👇

The failures of the current system have been known for over 10 years thanks to Jim Orford. Vicious Games explains why nothing has changed. We need a new gambling Act that focuses on preventing harm rather than growing an extractive industry. plutobooks.com/9780745340395…
Replying to @maizie333
The committee referred to Fair Game, a report from 2014 led by @ProfRCassidy on the dangers of a research system predominantly reliant on industry funding research.gold.ac.uk/id/eprin… Hopefully we don't have to wait another 10 years for meaningful change to broken UK gambling laws.

This inquiry focuses on a health-harming industry & how to regulate it – can we assume that it will hear from Directors of Public Health & leaders in the field of commercial determinants of health, many of whom work in the UK? 🧵committees.parliament.uk/wor…

In the interests of transparency, will the organisations involved in consultations following the #gamblingwhitepaper including @DCMS @DHSCgovuk and @GamRegGB undertake to publish lists of attendees, the reasons they were selected, and to make public the content of the meetings?

So depressing to hear @lucyfrazermp say that regulations must not get in the way of 'people who want to have a flutter'. Please stop using the cosy image of a two pound bet on the National to justify a massive commercial industry based on exploitation.plutobooks.com/9780745340395…

Disease resistant good fruit quality cultivars should be the focus of fruit breeding. Newly released disease susceptible 🍎 🍏 cultivars need frequent sprays & are costly to the environment. We need responsible #PlantBreeding for sustainable future.

It was a real privilege to travel to Geneva and see the amazing work being done by @FruitDiseases at @CornellCALS. Collaborations can help us to understand the 'culture' in horticulture!
It was great to have @ProfRCassidy visit us & discuss some of our ongoing research on genetics of disease resistance & pre breeding of #Apples

Important thread from @maizie333 showing that gambling reform is possible and exposing the tactics used to derail it: failing to focus on products and policies, ignoring good enough evidence and insisting on perfection. We know these tactics inside out. Time to get past them.
As the 2005 Gambling Act is under review, there are sometimes questions about what to do given there are few robust, independent evaluations of the effectiveness of policy interventions to prevent or reduce gambling harms and in an equitable way. 🧵

The government is soon to release its gambling white paper, with much discussion in the media this week about what it may contain. Everyone in the UK should be taking note as this white paper touches us all 🧵

If the voluntary levy remains the primary method of funding, the independent research that is desperately needed, including about gambling and suicide, will not get done. No more status quo. Retweet if you agree. #gamblingreview @DCMS @GambleAware @GamRegGB

Teaching children and young people about public health issues like gambling harms is challenging and involves engaging with complex concepts including the role of powerful vested interests🧵
