Getting to do this lecture -- which sought to provide a structural explanation for why urban public services in America struggle despite the high productivity of our private sector -- was such a thrill! law.yale.edu/yls-today/news/…

Wait, um, I thought abundance was a failed project? Why did yet another city elect a new abundance mayor who is passing abundance policies? What the heck?

NYC's property tax system is extremely unique. One of its features: it shields renters and homeowners from property tax increases by shifting the tax burden to utilities (mainly on Con Ed's electric system) by artificially increasing their taxable value.
Result: higher rates.

Florida may reallocate $12b annually. The winners? The wealthy.
The expansion of the homestead exemption is an immediate wealth transfer.
And, it will make for a less dynamic economy as wealthier, older homeowners lock up valuable land and keep younger families out.

Today's property tax revolt has mostly been a Republican thing. But the support for major property tax cuts from progressives like @AbdulElSayed and @FrancescaHongWI show the idea has bipartisan appeal

Totally. It’s one of the very few “there’s no point talking to anyone about this story who hasn’t read it” type of articles.
Just want to point out that the Weil collapse appears to follow, almost blow by blow, the theoretical framework that John Morley provided in this article from way back in 2019. Rarely has a law and economics theory been vindicated by real life so completely. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.…

Exclusionary zoning is bad.
But "inclusionary zoning," rather than being the opposite of bad exclusionary zoning, is just the same old exclusionary barriers to multifamily housing given a new name.
Just say no!

Great piece in @TheArgumentMag by @Yale’s @ZLiscow: the deficit isn't just taxes vs. cuts. High-skilled immigration, housing and permitting reform, investing in kids, and R&D can raise growth and make the budget trade-offs less painful

Today we’re announcing a $600M Series C, co-led by @CapitalG and @emergencecap, to bring fully autonomous machines to more job sites across the U.S.
We want autonomous equipment to become beautifully unremarkable, as ordinary on a job site as GPS or grade control.

Just to be clear. This redevelopment goes from 2,000 old NYCHA units to:
2,000 new NYCHA units, plus
1,000 additional new affordable units, plus
2,000 new market rate units
And the old buildings don’t come down until the new buildings have been built and NYCHA residents move in.
