A young 18th-century student practiced penmanship by copying out names in an indenture (now @UkNatArchives) on the verso. The student eventually wrote, “Blockhead” a few times and finally wrote, “I am a Blockhead” in a neat, calligraphic hand!

Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex, was the founder of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and Lady of the Bedchamber to Elizabeth I. She is buried in the Abbey, and at the foot of her tomb effigy is a wooden blue and gold porcupine, from her family's coat of arms. #31DaysOfGraves #Colour

A standing ovation for 50 years of the National Theatre. It has challenged us, moved us, made us laugh, and brought millions together through the power of storytelling. An honour to join its anniversary celebrations on the South Bank.

The ‘Hunterston Brooch’ which was probably produced in Ireland or the West of Scotland in around 700 AD. It was found near Hunterston in North Ayrshire during the 1830s. Now part of the collections at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. 📸 My own. #FindsFriday

Elizabethan courtier and explorer Sir Walter Raleigh died #onthisday in 1618. The mastermind behind expeditions to colonise Virginia was executed for treason in Old Palace Yard, by St Margaret's Church, after being accused of plotting with France. His body is buried in St Margaret's and he is remembered with this stained glass window which depicts scenes from his live.
