𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗶 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝟯𝟬-𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽 On 27 October, the Finance Ministry quietly fixed the inverted duty structure that had been quietly killing Indian garment makers for three decades. Input taxes were higher than output taxes, so manufacturers paid the government first and then waited months to get their own money back while Bangladesh and Vietnam faced zero such handicap. Congress spent years dismantling textile capacity at home and watching the orders walk to Bangladesh. This government has now removed the self-inflicted barrier and is openly aiming to pull back a slice of the $20 billion apparel market those countries have been sitting on. Bangladesh is politically unstable and losing European orders. Vietnam is full and its labour costs are rising. The window is open. This is not a press-release reform. It is a direct competitive advantage handed to Indian MSMEs at the exact moment global buyers are looking for a reliable alternative. The textile ministry finally has a clean operating environment instead of a tax trap. Whether the numbers actually move by December will depend on execution, but the structural excuse is gone. For the first time in a generation, Indian garment exporters are not fighting their own tax system while trying to take market share from their neighbours. The neighbours who once feasted on India’s policy mistakes now have a problem. The tax scissors just cut the advantage Bangladesh and Vietnam had been living on for thirty years.
