Plenty of classical scholars allowed music: Ibn Hazm, Al-Ghazali, Al-Shawkani, Al-Nablusi & Ibn Abd al-Salam. There's clear ikhtilaf (disagreement) on it. Al-Ghazali has a beautiful section on its spiritual benefits in his Ihya Ulum al-Din in Kitab Adab al-Sama' wa-l-Wajd.
