real design school is just youtube tutorials and an unhealthy amount of blind self-belief

PSA: if the job description says on-site SF and not on-site/remote or hybrid, and you still don't want to move, please don’t send the message asking if it's possible to make an exception for you. Especially when I'm hearing from you for the first time.
I moved my family from Croatia to SF to build this company and there are people asking if they can fly in from Paris twice a year and make it work.
I'm sure remote/hybrid works very well for some of the most well-established companies out there, but most of us do well by coming to work together in one place. Totally fine if that's not for you but don't make absurd requests and waste either of our time.

in sf, visiting someone's office is a sacred ritual and a show of great mutual respect
if you visit someone's office, both parties are now in the equivalent of a blood pact and expected to lay down their lives for each other
I would have loved this job 10 yrs ago. Apply!
Atoms are the new bits. 25% of YC startups now build hardware, so we're setting up a YC Hardware Lab in Dogpatch.
We're hiring the person to run it. If you've built hardware and know your way around a shop, apply or send us someone great: ycombinator.com/careers?job_…
Not doing one of those "Hi, I'm new to SF" tweets, but this is me if you are new here:

(surprise, I'm not a cute pink fuzzy coffee loving character)
been here long enough to worry about this:

the thrill of working with hardware is talking with >15 suppliers and one finally gives you everything you need
my god, i just need to buy a few hundred kgs of steel and have it shipped to my house, the amount of convos to get it done was staggering
there were several reasons this was hard:
> i live in a residential zone, so no one would deliver 6m tubes (which are the defaults) cause that requires a long ass truck that passes city road’s weight limit (10 ton including load)
> because i live in a residential zone, most suppliers nearby either sell aluminum or inox, cause these metals are lighter, more maintainable (rusts) especially in tropical weather
> so i had to find a supplier who both cuts black steel tubes, ships in smaller trucks, and is willing to ship to my place (cause most black steel tubes suppliers are outside of my city since their main demand comes from not residential but industrial)
anyway, things are about to get fun
If you have kids ages 5-12, cherish this day.
A Friday before Halloween when all kids get dressed up for school, there's an inevitable parade, anticipation amp'd by it being a Friday.
They are at that sweet spot of picking their own costume but needing your help.
And btw, your Halloween experience with kids maps to the below. Look forward to the day when I'm drinking a beer with my daughters handing out candy.
Holy moly, he nails this.
From ages 1-5, kids are glorified pets. Love you unconditionally, super cute. Depend on you for everything.
From ages 13 and beyond, they are young adults. They are who they are. In the best of scenarios, they love you deeply but still rather be around their friends. And that will be forever.

For fifty eight years, my boss in Tokyo believed that beef should be sliced as thin as paper.
In Japan, we cook thin meat for four seconds in boiling broth. That is our way.
Then last month, the YouTube algorithm showed Director Sato a video of a man in Texas smoking a brisket.
It changed his life.
On Monday morning, he called me to his desk. His eyes were bloodshot.
"Have you seen this?" he whispered, turning his monitor toward me. "The American pitmaster does not sleep for sixteen hours. He sits by the fire in the dark. He guards the meat like a castle."
I said, "Sir, it is just a barbecue."
He slammed his hand on the desk.
"This is not cooking," he said. "This is a vigil."
Last Saturday was our annual company picnic by the river in Kanagawa. Normally, we grill thin meat and yakisoba for two hours and go home at 2:00 PM.
I arrived at 9:30 AM to help set up.
Director Sato was already there.
I want to be accurate here: he had been sitting in a folding chair since 10:00 PM on Friday night. He was wearing a towel around his head and staring at a massive black barrel smoker he had imported from Oklahoma.
Inside I said: THIS MAN HAS ABANDONED CORPORATE LIFE FOR THE SMOKE.
When we tried to help him, he held up a pair of metal tongs and clicked them twice.
"Step back," he said calmly. "The stall has begun. Nobody opens the lid."
Twelve Japanese accountants stood in complete silence around a barrel for four more hours. Nobody dared to eat a single noodle until he gave the signal.
At 1:45 PM, he sliced the meat. It fell apart on the cutting board.
My boss looked at the pink smoke ring, nodded once, and wiped a single tear from his cheek.
He has already submitted an official budget request for a trailer smoker for next fiscal year.
Need to take my bicycle in for service, but the baby took the BMW to school (she usually bikes to school).
