The couple raised three children, one of whom, Captain Cecil Trevor Hamilton Whiteside, served with the 2nd Light Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps in the Second World War. Cecil’s journey took him through France, North Africa, Normandy, and Germany.

After the war, Robert's wife, Leonore, made frequent visits to her husband’s grave in Versailles. She presented a Union Flag to the Imperial War Graves Commission to fly over the cemetery, personally replacing the flag whenever needed until WW2 and Leonore’s death in 1946.

During WW1, Captain Robert Borras Whiteside served in France with the Royal Army Service Corps. Tragically, he died from fever on 20 April 1915 while being treated at No. 4 General Hospital in Versailles. He was laid to rest at Les Gonards Communal Cemetery @CWGC

#Remembrance 2026: Cdt C Air pays tribute to his great-great-uncle, Sgt F W "Ferdie" Francis, who served with the 4th County of London Yeomanry in North Africa, Italy, and Normandy. Thank you to Cdt Air, his family, A Francis, M Swan, and H Garland for the materials provided.

Cdt Air is not only proud of Ferdie's service, but of who he was as a person: friendly and approachable. This is reflected in cartoon sketches made by local Cookham artist Gwen Jones, depicting a light hearted and cheerful Ferdie. A testament to his impact on his community.

Ferdie was captured in the village of Villers-Bocage on 13 June 1944. For a time, he was reported MIA or presumed dead while imprisoned at Stalag XII-A in Limburg. Just two days after VE Day, he was released and flown home to England. Ferdie passed away in 1974 aged 60.
