It appears that the @nesta_uk report on this is what is driving the rethink. Nesta argues that abolishing gas standing charge (and increasing unit cost) will reduce bills for the majority, though will increase on wealthiest households, and that it supports electrification by improving incentives - what is known as the “spark gap” pushing it down to 3.18 (it’s 2ish or below in France/ Scandinavia). Threshold for benefit would be below 12000 kWh a year. No exchequer cost. Typical household saving £22 a year, after netting out increase in unit costs, it says.

Agreed. His ‘market socialism’ is another way of describing Andy Burnham ‘s business friendly socialism. The liberal left is beginning to cohere around a coherent 21st century liberal social democratic programme. Something of a moment!

AI for science could be more impactful than chatbots. It is already helping win Nobel prizes and accelerating drug development and materials discovery. Today we published an essay about why it matters, how it’s happening and its implications. Let’s look at it like economists.

2) It is feasible and cost-effective to adopt radical action on obesity so halving obesity as a goal should be established in 10 yr health plan, with a body - akin to Climate Change Committee - set up to monitor progress and recommend any policy changes.

3) Most strategies contain lofty objectives and a list of initiatives, rather than quantify the impact of policies on outcome. While there are uncertainties, all strategies should replace adjectives with numbers rather than put these in impact assessments after policy decided.
