We need to be absolutely clear about Macklemore’s bigoted dog whistle at MetLife. He did not simply call for the protection of Palestinian civilians. He explicitly praised “the bravery of Columbia University students who led an encampment movement” and celebrated the movement that inspired “Hind’s Hall.” Columbia’s own investigation found that after October 7, the students at these encampments engaged in illegality, rule breaking, and extreme harassment. Jewish students reported “harassment, verbal abuse and ostracism, and in some cases physical violence.” The investigation documented repeated violations of university rules and said that what students experienced during the encampment and takeover of Hamilton Hall was “even more extreme.” These radical encampment students distributed propaganda leaflets supporting Hamas themes, celebrated the October 7 attacks, and aggressively called for murderous violence through their chants to “globalize the intifada.” There is no public record of any of them calling for Hamas to immediately surrender unconditionally, lay down its arms, and release all the hostages. By supporting these students specifically, Macklemore was throwing in his lot with bigotry, intolerance, and incitement to violence. There should be unlimited room at concerts and everywhere else to advocate passionately for Palestinian rights, Israeli rights, peace, dignity and the protection of innocent civilians. But glorifying a movement associated with documented harassment, intimidation, calls to violence, and serious rule-breaking is something very different. Macklemore has every right to present himself as a hate filled bigot. Private concert venues have every right to refuse to align themselves with this toxic bigotry.
