Strongest case from a religious-Zionist / messianic-expectation reading of the events:
Netanyahu fits the pattern of a failed or false Mashiach ben Yosef. Some rabbis and Hardali circles have long cast him in that precursor role: a long-serving leader who gathers strength, fights Israel’s wars, and is expected to prepare the ground for final redemption. The reported willingness to dump Ben-Gvir, form a post-election unity government with Eisenkot, and secure a personal pardon under U.S. pressure can be read as the classic false-messiah betrayal—elevating personal survival and external legitimacy over the “full right-wing government” many of his religious supporters viewed as non-negotiable for the redemptive process. Historical false messiahs (Bar Kokhba, Sabbatai Zevi) also commanded intense loyalty before their compromises or collapses produced catastrophic disillusionment.
Trump functions as the pseudo-Cyrus / false peacemaker. The Cyrus analogy is already widespread among pro-Israel evangelicals and some Israeli right-wingers for Jerusalem, the Abraham Accords, and military backing. In this reading the same figure who appears to advance Jewish sovereignty is simultaneously the external power pushing a “unity” arrangement that excludes the religious-nationalist camp and trades hardline positions for diplomatic normalization and Netanyahu’s personal legal relief. The result is a temporary, externally engineered calm that looks like progress but actually freezes or reverses the settlement, Temple-related, and sovereignty agenda that far-right religious Zionists treat as essential to the messianic timeline.
The Ben-Gvir accusations and the exclusion of Otzma Yehudit from strategy meetings with religious-Zionist rabbis are the visible fracture. For communities that treated Netanyahu’s continued rule as providential and Ben-Gvir’s presence as the necessary hard edge of the right-wing bloc, the public charge that Netanyahu has already promised Washington a government without them is evidence that the supposed messianic vessel has chosen political survival over the camp that elevated him. That produces exactly the internal schism predicted in some end-times readings: the religious extremists who most strongly identified the current leadership with the “footsteps of the Messiah” now turn against it, accelerating fragmentation on the far right rather than unified national redemption.
