NEW: After nearly 18 months at odds with Pope Leo XIV over immigration and the war in Iran, President Trump’s approval among American Catholics has fallen to 30 percent, near the lowest Pew has ever recorded for him.
The steepest drop has come among Latino Catholics, a group that helped carry him to the White House. Only 18 percent now approve of his job performance.
In April, Trump called Leo “WEAK on Crime” and claimed the first American pope owed his election to him, while Vance lectured the pontiff to “be careful” about theology.
Now the backlash is landing in the swing districts that will decide the House, where Catholics make up a far larger share of voters than they do nationally. thelettersfromleo.com/p/trum…

In the wake of unprecedented cuts enacted last year, the number of people receiving SNAP has fallen to a 17-year low. If that decline was because fewer people needed help, we probably wouldn't be seeing more and more people seeking help from food banks!
Food banks across the country are under growing strain as more people seek assistance amid cuts to federal nutrition programs, rising living costs, and increasing uncertainty about access to government benefits. news.bgov.com/bloomberg-gove…

CBO weighs in on Senate R farm bill: The permanent future SNAP cut exceeds the cost of a 1-year cost shift delay & other investments, so there's an overall cut to nutrition programs. But billions in un-offset spending in other titles means the bill as a whole adds to the deficit.

It is SO frustrating when you make a drs appt months in advance - then they need to reschedule and say you need to wait months for an opening. You made the change - not me, there should be some accomodation when it's not of my choosing...
Thank you @GovKathyHochul for continuing to prioritize programs that connect kids with meals. I'm proud to be a NYer where feeding kids was a BIPARTISAN priority for the state - now it's time for our federal elected officials to stop playing games with people's ability to eat...

NEW: In the year after the Republican reconciliation law enacted deep cuts, 5.5 million people lost access to SNAP nationwide, including an estimated 2 million children. It's increasingly urgent for Congress to act before even more families lose SNAP. cbpp.org/research/food-assis…
Such great news for New Yorkers! Thank you @NYCMayor , DM Arteaga, @nycHealthy , and @NYCHealthCommr for working together to keep NYers connected to #SNAP and #Medicaid. Hunger is on the rise and I'm so grateful to see this effort to reach directly into communities!

"...faith requires action. It demands something of us. "Feed the hungry" means feed the hungry. "Welcome the stranger" means welcome the stranger. Defend the vulnerable. Stand against injustice. Treat every human being with dignity...." Thank you @RepMcGovern - I feel this deeply
I'm a progressive Democrat because of my faith—not in spite of it. And I think it's time more of us said so. Read my latest oped in the National Catholic Reporter:

27,000 New Yorkers lost their SNAP benefits due to cruel cuts from the federal government. If you’re one of them, New York City is here to help.
As of October 1st, you can re-enroll for SNAP benefits. But there are new rules.
Call 718-SNAP-NOW or visit nyc.gov/ACCESSHRA for help re-enrolling and to understand what’s changed.
While Washington turns its back on working Americans, New York is here for you. Because everyone deserves to put food on their table.
Very important report from @NYSComptroller showing the threats to free meals for all kids in NY due to federal changes to #SNAP. In NY, free school meals receives significant bipartisan support - SNAP needs the same!
Hunger should never prevent children from learning in school. The universal school meal program is a great success in NY, but federal cuts could increase state costs to maintain this essential program.
