Richard Rapport, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Dmitry Andreikin and Amin Tabatabaei spent the first half of August playing club chess in Ankara.
So did Lei Tingjie, and so did Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, who is 15 and already the highest rated junior.
The people who got something out of Ankara were mostly the ones nobody flew in to watch.
Khagan Ahmad is fifteen, Azerbaijani, and an IM already. Against that field he scored 9.5 out of 13 for a 2704 TPR and his first GM norm, and his live rating crossed 2500 on the way.
Xeniya Balabayeva took an IM norm and 59 Elo, the biggest gain of anyone in the tournament, and is now at the highest rating she has ever had.
