🎧 #SixthTimeAround That’s a wrap!
Another brilliant weekend for RadioSed’s Next Time Around series.

A huge thank you to everyone who’s read, liked, commented or joined the conversation.

The Beautiful South — Quench (1998)
While Britpop ruled the 90s, they were my band.
Six albums in, Heaton & Rotheray still delivered wit, wisdom, wonderful melodies and life’s uncomfortable truths.
A glorious outlier.
Losing Things joins the playlist.

Arctic Monkeys — Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018)
From AM’s guitar swagger to lunar lounge sophistication. A seismic, necessary reinvention.
Alex Turner at his songwriting peak. An extraordinary album.
Batphone joins the RadioSed Current 50. 🚀

The Beatles — Rubber Soul (1965)
Effortless melodies, glorious harmonies, extraordinary songwriting. Among their very best.
I’d lose What Goes On and Run for Your Life, though!
In My Life is perfection, and joins the RadioSed Current 50.

🥁 Happy 65th birthday to Larry Mullen Jr.!
The heartbeat of U2 for nearly five decades.
His finest studio performance? For me, it’s Acrobat from Achtung Baby.
Ferocious, relentless, brilliantly controlled. An absolute masterclass.
Don’t let the bastards drag you down, Larry!

Blur — 13 (1999)
Messy, experimental, occasionally indulgent, yet wonderfully listenable.
Battle, Caramel and Trimm Trabb are magnificent.
And Tender? Bland, bloated and hugely overrated. There, I said it! 😂
Battle joins the RadioSed Current 50.

Oasis: Don’t Believe the Truth (2005).
The critics had lost faith. The fans never did.
Lyla, The Importance of Being Idle, Turn Up the Sun, Part of the Queue (our track choice) & the beautiful Let There Be Love.
A band rediscovering its swagger & songwriting.

Pulp’s This Is Hardcore (1998) was the death knell of Britpop.
We’d all moved on. Pulp arrived to kill it. Dead.
A difficult, often exhausting album, but Help the Aged, A Little Soul, Dishes and that magnificent title track are sensational.

U2’s Please (1997), from the hugely misunderstood Pop, contains one of Bono’s greatest vocal moments.
That extraordinary falsetto. One word, repeated with almost unbearable emotion.
He’s no longer singing it. He’s pleading it.
Quite magnificent.

42 years ago today, Frankie Goes to Hollywood released Welcome to the Pleasuredome. The first proper band album I ever bought. I still remember putting on my headphones in 1984, hearing that astonishing 14-minute title track & being completely blown away.
42 years on, still am.
