turns out a raspberry pi was indeed one of the most secure ways to sign your bitcoin transactions 🤣

Under the new Ai landscape, being a security project dev is harder than you think. Turn off your BTCPay server until a patch is released.
🚨 We are receiving reports of hot wallets on BTCPay Servers being swept by unauthorized attackers. If you're running an instance, please shut it down (./btcpay-down.sh) until we complete the investigation.

There's a bug in Electrum, a popular Bitcoin wallet, and attackers are already using it. If you use Electrum, update to version 4.8.3 now! Here's how the attack works.. Electrum doesn't download the whole blockchain. Unless you run your own server, it asks someone else's server what's happening with your wallet. A dishonest server can abuse that trust. 1. You send a payment. The dishonest server quietly throws it away, so it never reaches the Bitcoin network. 2. The server then shows your wallet a fake pending payment that sends your coins to the attacker instead. The attacker's address is made to end with the same characters as the real one, so it looks right at a glance. 3. The fake has no fee, so it looks stuck. Older Electrum versions don't check its signatures, so they show it as your own payment. 4. You do what anyone would do with a stuck payment. You speed it up by raising the fee (a "fee bump", also called RBF). Your wallet signs a brand new, valid version of the fake, and now the attacker really gets paid. At least one person has already lost money this way. Checking only the last few characters of an address won't protect you here. Check the whole address and the amount before you sign. How EntropyLab helps. EntropyLab never connects to the internet, so no server can slip it a fake transaction. Its PSBT Inspector, the tool that shows exactly what a transaction does before you sign it, has a section called "Check a fee bump". Before you speed up a payment, paste in the original transaction you saved when you first sent it, then inspect the speed-up transaction your wallet wants you to sign. If any payment now goes to a different address or a different amount, it shows red with "A payment was changed or removed." In this attack, that's exactly what you'd see. One catch. The check is only as good as the original you give it. Use the copy you saved when you first sent the payment, not the one your wallet shows you now, because that one may be the fake. Compared with the fake, the bump looks fine. No saved copy? The PSBT Inspector still shows the full address and amount of every payment. Compare the whole address with the one you meant to pay, not just the last few characters.

I was the biggest proponent of multivendor multisig until I stopped for a second and thought about it. The UX is absolute fucking garbage and the recoverability for loved ones is extremely unlikely unless they're practicing using it multiple times a year...which kind of defeats the purpose because that means you'd be traveling to the signers frequently enough to tip off attackers where they are (or enough of the signers were all together from the start and not geographically distributed). Collaborative custody makes sense in some cases but with major tradeoffs and multisig makes more sense for federated/shared ownership of bitcoin.

Signing is not storing. Keys should never go on a machine that touches the internet. That is the entire argument. An air gapped box, no Wi Fi, minimal image, signs over QR or SD, you check the outputs, the change, the fee, the sighash, the nonce before it broadcasts. Different threat model entirely. A kernel bug that needs network access cannot touch a device with no network. Purpose built hardware gets backdoored too. Bigger Bitcoin gets, more incentive to backdoor the supply chain. So you do not trust the box. You verify what it hands you. If your checks are real, a lying signer is a non event. Multisig is for multiple locations you physically need to go, collaborative custody and company treasury. Not for I am scared my signer is cheating. That is what inspection is for.

Sure, but that’s not related to what I said.

Hey, guys. I just want to share with you that Jesus has saved me. And I know for sure that if he can save someone like me, he can surely save someone like you. This gift is available to all. Literally nothing disqualifies you from receiving it. Do you know the story of Paul? He wrote a lot of the Bible. But before that, he literally murdered Christians. Yes, he literally killed people for professing the name of Christ. So, don't think you are too far gone or that you are too sinful for redemption. You are not. All of us are sinners. Every single one of us needs Jesus, and I certainly need him just as much as you do. "Call on the name of the Lord and you will be saved." You know who said that? Paul... the guy who used to murder Christians. We can be so prideful, that we find it impossible something like eternal salvation can be free. We think, "surely I have to do something to earn it". Let me tell you, there is no amount of going to church, giving to the poor, or reciting Hail Marys that can get you to heaven, so don't even try. You can't do it. All you need to do is accept what Jesus already did. It is absolutely, 100%, completely free. Don't let your pride keep you from getting the best gift in the world at the best price. It's everything, and it is already paid for. As long as there is breath in your lungs, it is not too late.

Hardware wallets a trusted 3rd parties that are absolutely not needed for saving bitcoin. An argument can be made that they are convenient for spending. The psyop was real.
