The other day, I attended a staff screening of director Mamoru Oshii’s latest film, “ARMORED TROOPER VOTOMS Die Graue Hexe,” and got to see it ahead of its release. WOW!!! Absolutely incredible!!! THIS IS IT!!! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! Oh, I’m so glad I’ve lived long enough to see this!!!! Welcome back, Director Oshii!!! You’ve completely blown me away!!! It brought back all the reasons I became a fan of Director Oshii when I was young, and reminded me once again why I admired him so much. Director Oshii will always be my mentor. Thank you so much!!! I’ll definitely see it at least three more times in theaters!! In theaters November 20! 👍 #ボトムズ #ボトムズ灰色の魔女 @votoms_gh

To provide context this is how the pro market in video games and general tv/movies works: Key art for a big IP: US agency - 100k usd (as they attach 20 ppl outside of thr artist that they in most cases don’t even have in house) Dedicated 2d agency that worked for RIOT (splash art) - 50k usd Top tier artist with big social following - 10-5k usd Top tier artists but not huge on socials - 3-5k usd Magic The Gathering quality lvl art - 2-4k usd Comic book cover artist - 1-3k usd (unless you are Mignola lvl) Indie Video game illustrator not from US - 1-2k This is for commercial work with the copyright attached - the same lvl art can be way cheaper for a indie studio or a passion project in between bigger more corporate work.
Replying to @chainsawroll
Judging by the people in the replies here, I think folks really need to better understand what artists can actually make for illustration work. This is less than one tenth of what those big ugly call of duty box art illustrations cost

It's surreal to see Animenomics nominated in this award category alongside big outlets like Bloomberg News, TheWrap, Variety, and Business Insider.
Animenomics has been named as a finalist in the @LAPressClub's National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards. We are nominated for a September 2025 story about Japanese amusement giant Genda's consolidation of more than 13,000 arcade machine locations across North America.

I'm gonna spell this out because this issue is deceptively subtle: 1. The Steam client and infrastructure is somewhere between "not that hard" and "trivial". It's a download service attached to a payment processor with a smattering of services on the side. Cloud providers handle all the infrastructure these days. 2. Steam takes 30% of gross revenue; ostensibly for the privilege of using these services, but in reality it is purely to get access to the massive Steam userbase. 3. Steam users love Steam and having their whole library in one place. It works. It's dependable. It has sales and cards and achievements, oh my! 4. PC developers have no option but to distribute through Steam or lose the vast majority of sales. Not releasing on Steam destroys the business model. 5. Therefore, no amount of competition will ever unseat Steam. People post-hoc rationalize this with memes about how gracious Gabe is. And how brilliant their services are. But realistically, no avid Steam user wants other stores to succeed. The mere existence of other stores risks splintering their precious collection. They are "all in" on Steam. Invested. Even if an alternative were objectively better, by whatever metric you care about, it would still be of no interest to Steam users. They would in fact find it to be a problem and a threat to their investment. Competition in this space is not only uninteresting to most Steam users, it's actively denigrated! The CONSEQUENCE of this situation, is that 30% of all gross revenue is siphoned out of the PC games industry into a black hole. It doesn't recirculate into studios. It doesn't pay any bonuses. It doesn't fund any sequels or DLC. This is a particularly insidious tax because it's well hidden. It's a second order effect. Most Steams users don't know, and the few that do never consider the aggregate effect this has on their favorite hobby. It's undeniable that, at this point in history, Valve could EASILY lower the distribution fee while maintaining healthy margins. But they don't have to. Users are locked into Steam and therefore developers are stuck paying 30% of gross revenue to Valve. The irony is that Steam users, the very ones maintaining this unbreakable stalemate, would benefit the most from a better financed game development ecosystem. I don't think this is fixable. It's just sad.
It's really sad that the games industry is drained by a 30% tax on gross revenue. You could vibe code a Steam alternative in a week. Cloudflare egress is basically free. The industry is in desperate need of a distribution platform that allows developers to keep their revenue. Networks effects and the fanatic obsession with "muh Steam library" will make this very difficul. But if devs could actually keep their earnings, we'd have a greater selection of better games and far more financial success stories.

Steam calculates its revenue share on net revenue after adjustments for refunds, chargebacks and taxes, not gross revenue. my approach for this Luffy artwork was to not erase a single brushstroke or line and just keep drawing over it. That's why you can see so many rough lines underneath everywehre. I gave to him a really rough manmade made look that shows the sketch and the final

Wow. Seven Seas Entertainment's box set of danmei (Chinese boys' love) novel series "The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System" has sold more than 20,000 units since release in February through September, parent company Media Do said in its mid-year earnings presentation last week.

We're back. Sorry for the wait. There is a lot to unpack, so I decided it was best to focus on why there's more space dedicated to manga compared to Western comics in bookstores like B&N as opposed to sales simply bc that's a separate & more involved discussion. 🧵

I do analysis on what anime overseas fans watch for publishers in Japan. Witch Hat Atelier is quite popular, even if the energy for the franchise disappeared faster than other A-level titles.
