Was Donald Trump's penguin tax the culmination of a Soviet plot?
Probably not. But find out why it's worth pondering in:

Great thread from @CubaNgondi
Amidst all the uproar about Kenya's recent tax reforms through the #rejectfinancebill2024, I finished reading a book titled 'TAXTOPIA' on how broken tax systems around the world are. Here are some things I learned🧵
If you would like to know what Jeremy Hunt is talking about...
Taxtopia is on a promotional sale on Kindle for 99p.

Want to read Taxtopia with only one hand?
The paperback is officially out this Thursday!
(Though if you ask nicely at an independent bookshop they'll probably give you a copy today.)
Want to read the book that everyone* is talking about, but don't want to pay more than 99p for it?
Well, for all of February you can, on your Kindle...
*sorry, I mean 'someone' (hopefully).
Thanks to Carmen Coetsee @TheSAnews for the great review of Taxtopia!
"Refreshing and surprisingly funny"

I love the categories you get to pick from when you complete a UK tax return:
Are you...
a) a child
b) a pensioner
c) foreign
d) a diving supervisor
e) none of the above
I might make this my new icebreaker question at parties
Scotland will now have:
9 income tax rates
6 tax thresholds
4 NIC rates
3 allowances
and the SNP are down 20 points in the polls
on the plus side, my tax-themed Christmas carols are writing themselves.
Things the government don't advertise:
You could be entitled to Universal Credit even if you earn more than £100,000 per year.
If everyone who was entitled to claim Universal Credit actually claimed it, income taxes would have to rise by at least 3% to pay for it.
Quiz question:
If you won £20,000 on the lottery, how much tax would you pay?
The answer actually depends on how rich you are:
If you're rich, you pay nothing
If you're poor, you'll pay 70%
Why? Because Universal Credit recipients aren't allowed savings of more than £6,000.
If anyone needs a refresher on what Full Expensing means, here's an example.
(Interesting that for a £10bn tax cut it doesn't actually save anyone any tax)
Too often we only look at the BIG taxes, like income tax or corporation tax.
It can be interesting to look at the small taxes too:
I know some people follow me hoping for tax avoidance tips, so here's a loophole for the Meat Tax:
There's no tax on Phoenix eggs or Manticore Steaks.
(Though butchers try not to advertise it, so ask surreptitiously.)
I met an accountant at a conference and asked if he worked at the 'Big 4'.
He replied, "No, but my firm's in the Top 11".
I now know how he feels...
