Pray, what does “protection of ancient temples” mean if they are not restored to their former glory & worship not permitted at the site?
Is @ASIGoI’s idea of conservation merely to preserve the ruins while letting the temples’ spiritual & cultural legacy fade away? @PMOIndia
We had written to PM @narendramodi asking for removing the ban on worship at ancient Hindu temples under his government and also for allowing them to be restored from ruins.
The @PMOIndia forwarded it to @ASIGoI who has closed the file with below remarks.

Dear @ASIGoI @PMOIndia temples are not monuments, they are meant to be abodes of our devatas, lets bring them alive, starting with Sun Temple Modhera.

What a strange response from ASI !
The AMASR Act, 1958 was enacted to protect ancient monuments, not to put an end to worship.
Section 16 expressly recognises protected monuments that are places of worship.
Yet ASI distinguishes between temples where worship continued and those where it stopped.
Stopped why? Invasions? Desecration? Centuries of abandonment?
Must a historical wrong become grounds for perpetuating it?
Even a Parliamentary Standing Committee in 2023 recommended examining the revival of worship, subject to conservation safeguards.
Nobody is asking ASI to compromise conservation. But surely Nitya Puja need not be incompatible with it.
And merely citing the AMASR Act without specifying the provision that prohibits worship is no answer at all.
A temple was built for worship. Its archaeology matters. So does its purpose.

🚨Such a disgraceful state of ancient Hindu temples in Ahmedabad under the authorities.
Believed to be over 300 years old, this was once a complex of 7 temples, out of which 1 has already collapsed. The entire complex is encroached, the sanctity of every temple is being violated, and the structures are collapsing with no one seeming to care.
These heritage sites are being destroyed while the Heritage Department doesn’t even seem to know they exist.
Our team in Ahmedabad will take up restoration work next week, with whatever resources and capacity we have. @RamdootRestores
🚨 Our scouting team has just discovered a complex of 7 ancient temples in Behrampura, Ahmedabad, believed to be around 300 years old.
Heavy encroachment and years of negligence are visible on the ground.
We will soon share videos, photos and more updates. @RamdootRestores

The Chausath Yogini temple at Bhedaghat, Jabalpur. It actually has 81 yoginis instead of 64 as the name indicates. It was constructed during the reign of Kalachuri Yuvarajadeva I by his prime minister Gollaka, a Gauda Kayastha, in the 10th century CE. Gollaka also built several collosal Vishnu Avatar idols at Bandhavagarh.

At Chellur Mahadeva Temple, one of Kerala’s revered Shiva Mahakshetras, the sacred tradition of Naagapuja has been revived.
This is what @ReclaimTemples is achieving on the ground.
Through @UgraNarsimha, over 200 temples have been documented, 7 restored and 10 more are undergoing restoration.
The mission goes beyond rebuilding ancient structures. It is about reviving worship, restoring sacred traditions and reconnecting communities with their temples.
Hindu Fund supports this vital work. You can help take it further.

Now yesterday Govt of J&K laid the foundation of dharamshala & allied blocks under Heritage scheme. Refreshing my memories 🍁

One of India's tallest minarets is the obscure Lanka Minar, Kalpi, #Jalaun district of UP. Amidst depictions of long snakes, human figures standing, sitting & lying down, the highlight is a carving of Ravana on the minar itself. Built in the mid 19th century.

This beautiful sight is what real work on the ground looks like.
On Amavasya, 10 October 2026, Vimal of @ReclaimTemples and his team revived Yogini worship at the ancient Chausath Yogini Mandir in Mitaoli, Madhya Pradesh. An interrupted tradition was brought back to life.
Hindu Fund is proud to support this work through the generosity of our patrons. But this is only one temple. Many more await revival. Our temples need more than admiration. They need action and sustained support.

A short and related thread ..
Yogini temples were generally circular or semi circular & hypaethral in design. It’s because of their hypaethral feature it’s suggested they were also centres for studies in astronomy & mathematics besides sadhnas in other vidyas related to Yogini worship.

If the takeover of the Anjanadri Hill temple can be overturned, why should other Hindu temples remain under government control?
Courts across India should take suo motu cognisance and examine the nationalisation of temples to restore their autonomy!
