Keeping our laws up to date to protect Second Amendment rights is something I will always stand for. Following a federal court ruling that removed certain National Firearms Act requirements for short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and suppressors, many law-abiding gun owners were left concerned that outdated and conflicting state laws could expose them to felony liability for conduct that was previously lawful. That’s why I co-sponsored HB 6285 to repeal outdated state restrictions, eliminate conflicting definitions in Michigan law, and remove associated penalties to ensure state law reflects these federal court decisions. The legislation also removes the prohibition on suppressors and repeals Section 224b, protecting law-abiding citizens from felony charges related to the manufacture, transfer, or possession of short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and suppressors. Medical debt should never force a family into a financial crisis. That's why I voted YES on HB's 6071-6073 and HB's 5254-5255, legislation designed to help patients better understand their options, connect struggling families with available financial assistance before bills are sent to collections, and protect consumers from unfair and predatory debt collection practices. The plan would require Michigan hospitals to establish clear financial assistance programs for patients who cannot afford care and make sure people know about those options before medical bills are sent to collections. For nearly two decades, nine counties in the United States have been subjected to carry 7.0-pound RVP gasoline, with EIGHT of them in Michigan alone. That’s right, eight southeast Michigan counties have been subject to carry 7.0-pound RVP gasoline, a completely separate summer fuel requirement that the rest of the state and country do not have to follow. That is why I co-sponsored HB 6281, legislation repealing Michigan’s state-specific summer vapor pressure mandate to ensure that E15 will be sold year-round in all Michigan counties. This means no more confusion and no more state specific labeling requirements. This proposal does not require anyone to buy or sell E15, nor does it change Michigan's federal air quality obligations. Instead, it reduces confusion, eliminates unnecessary state-specific requirements, and ensures every county is treated equally under state law. One state, one set of rules. Families are feeling the squeeze from rising costs, and every dollar matters. That's why my House colleagues and I advanced commonsense measures to lower costs and protect consumers. I recently voted to prohibit “price optimization,” a practice that allows auto insurers to charge higher premiums based on whether they think a customer is unlikely to shop around. Insurance rates should be based on risk, not willingness to pay. I also recently voted to expand access to cost efficient E15 and E85 fuel options in Michigan. This would lower prices at the pump by an estimated 20 to 40 cents per gallon, saving the average family hundreds of dollars each year. It would also support Michigan farmers by creating greater demand for corn grown right here at home. Last week, I had the privilege of standing alongside the family of LCpl. Michael Wayne Hanks as the Governor signed HB 4189 into law, officially designating the South Grand Avenue bridge over I-96 in Fowlerville as the “LCpl. Michael W. Hanks Memorial Bridge.” I was honored to be joined by Karen Hanks, Tucker Gladstone, and Makiah Gladstone, the mother, nephew, and niece of LCpl. Hanks. For LCpl. Hanks, the Fowlerville exit marked the place he called home. Now, that same route will serve as a lasting tribute to a hometown hero who gave his life in service to our nation. This memorial ensures that future generations will remember his sacrifice, courage, and commitment to something greater than himself. I am especially grateful to his sister, Melissa Hanks Ketchel, whose unwavering dedication made this recognition possible. It has been an honor to work with her and the Hanks family to preserve Michael's legacy. This bridge will now stand as a permanent reminder that LCpl. Michael W.
