Many of the abortion laws still enforced across Africa today were inherited from colonial legal systems.
Long before these criminal laws were imposed, African societies had diverse ways of understanding and regulating pregnancy, abortion and reproductive decision-making.
Colonial rule changed that landscape, embedding abortion within criminal law frameworks that many countries continue to live with today.
Understanding that history matters when we talk about abortion law reform and what we call “African values.”

Today we had meaningful conversation on safe abortion, access and reproductive rights, bringing together health, legal and youth voices to reflect on the barriers women and girls face in accessing care.

For many young people, lack of information can turn unsafe methods into their only perceived option.
We need to take accurate reproductive health information and safe pathways to care into informal and marginalised communities.

Today, we are joining fellow SRHR partners at a symposium bringing together health, legal and youth voices to unpack the realities of abortion access for women and girls in Kenya.
The Center’s Senior Legal Adviser, Prudence Mutiso, will join the panel discussion, “Safe Abortion Is Life-Saving Healthcare,” bringing a legal and human rights perspective to the conversation on abortion access and the barriers that people face in accessing care.
Okoko Felicitus, a gender and climate justice advocate, speaks about her experience with pregnancy.

Abortion is essential healthcare. Abortion is a human right.
Then, why do restrictive laws still push women and girls into unsafe care, create fear among healthcare providers and stand in the way of dignity, autonomy, health and equality?
This International Safe Abortion Day, we call for laws that protect not criminalize.
For abortion care that is safe, accessible and dignified.
For reproductive autonomy without criminalization.
For every woman and girl to exercise her rights without fear.
The work continues.

What happens when the right to safe abortion exists, but access does not?
At just 13, AC (a minor) became pregnant after sexual violence. When she sought a safe abortion, she was denied care despite the risks the pregnancy posed to her health. She had to seek another opinion before finally receiving the care she needed.
Her story is a reminder of what International Safe Abortion Day asks us to confront: a legal right means little if women and girls cannot actually access the care they need.
We call for abortion care that is safe, accessible and free from barriers, stigma and discrimination.
Because access cannot stop at the law.
