ALT Photo of disabled protesters holding banners, with a green overlay. Bold text reads: The welfare system is designed to make us justify why we or our loved ones ‘deserve’ support. This makes it out that some people are undeserving of support - are a ‘burden’. This is the welfare state in our heads - telling us that paid work equals worth and that being on benefits is a failing. This turns shame into a weapon that kills people.

ALT two different shades of brown background. Text reads: Work ≠ worth. Every one of us deserves support.

ALT 4 - two different shades of brown background. Text reads: “Control of disabled people is present in all areas of the welfare state…there is a repetition, a pattern, a relentlessness present, which is designed to wear people down” Tumu Johnson. “Every single death was preventable. And not preventable by the families, not preventable by peer-support, or anything like that; it was preventable by the system” Imogen Day.

ALT brown and white background. Text reads: Deaths by Design. As we build power against welfare state violence, it's essential that we see the welfare system, and its connections to wider State violence, as a system harmful by design. If we only talk about the violence of the welfare system as “mistakes” and "flaws", we risk channeling our energy into fixing what’s "broken". But what if it is functioning just as it was designed?

ALT Background image is an illustration of a person with a purpley-pink afro whose face is being pulled away from their head and body as they scream and cry. The image is set against a background of multicoloured tiles. In the foreground, white text reads: Psychiatric Abolition. In Practice. Psychiatric abolition is rooted in creating care and networks of support outside of psychiatric systems. It is a position that involves dismantling the coercive state power held within psychiatry, and nourishing community-based means of care for people navigating mental health crises. White text reads: Deep horror, rage, grief & resistance remain in us, witnessing the multiple ongoing genocides currently happening in this moment. The horrific violence and oppression affecting Palestinian, Sudanese, Lebanese, Congolese, Syrian, Haitian, Yemeni and so many people in the Global South. It continues to cause devastation, distress, overwhelm, heartache & pain on an unimaginable level. We are holding two collective care & support spaces for affected communities, on 9 October (online) & 15 October (in person). Led by community practitioners, sharing gentle supportive techniques for grief and distress, while offering space for sharing. These spaces will centre impacted communities, whilst also offering space for racialised people & allies to join in collective grief/solidarity.
