Multi-immersion oblique plane microscopy: a flexible light-sheet microscope for imaging a range of biological sample types. @RetoPaul
nature.com/articles/s41592-0…
Our multi-immersion oblique plane microscope manuscript is online now.
A light-sheet system that can be adapted to different imaging tasks, including a continuous volumetric correction for imaging in media of (theoretically) any refractive index.
nature.com/articles/s41592-0…
miOPM leverages Any Immersion Remote Refocusing (AIRR), which extends traditional remote focusing to samples with a refractive index mismatch.
Below, we adjust the miOPM to the refractive index (bead sample, cleared tissue).
We also derive the AIRR theory mathematically.

Are you planning a PhD in neuroscience?
The Department of Neurobiology at USC has launched a new PhD program, and we’re recruiting our first cohort.
Our labs seek answers to:
How animals learn, remember, and choose what to do.
How synapses transmit signals and stay stable over a lifetime.
How neural circuits are built, how they fail in disease, and can they be repaired?
How the brain turns sensation into action.
We investigate these questions at scales from single synapses to whole-brain networks, using molecular, genetic, physiological, imaging, computational, and behavioral approaches across model systems.
Explore our labs: dornsife.usc.edu/neurobiolog…
What you’ll get:
Full funding: tuition plus a $43,000 annual stipend and health insurance
A small cohort with direct faculty mentorship, where you’ll help shape a program as it grows
Lab rotations across three faculty labs before you choose your thesis lab
Los Angeles: a major research hub with S-tier climate, cultural vibrancy and global influence
Applications due December 1, 2026. GRE optional. Application fee waivers available based on demonstrated need.
Apply here: dornsife.usc.edu/neurobiolog…
Any questions? Reply or DM and I’m happy to answer.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 Booster Landing Team awarded 1st-ever Neil Armstrong Space Prize! 🔥
Purdue awards the prize to “those whose contributions to space in the preceding decade are deemed the most consequential for humanity,” according to the prize’s website.
Falcon 9 was the world’s first reusable rocket — a technical achievement long considered impossible in the industry.
The team consisted of Lars Blackmore, senior principal Mars landing engineer; Shana Diez, senior director, Starship reliability; Jon Edwards, senior vice president, Falcon & Dragon projects; Yoshiaki Kuwata, principal GNC engineer; and Eduardo Velazquez, director, Crew Starship engineering.
The Nancy Grace Roman Space telescope is on its way to the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point.
It features a dual deformable AO system, and other nice optics.
cc @Eric_Betzig Do you know more about its wavefront correction system?

A couple years in the making, but the preprint is finally out! We developed a pipeline for timelapse, volumetric FLIM (vFLIM) that incorporates multi-channel light sheet excitation, a SPAD array detector for widefield FLIM, and ML lifetime processing.

And finally—a bit of personal news:
🔬 I’m on the faculty job market this year!
I’m looking for tenure-track opportunities where I can build a lab at the intersection of developmental biology, mechanobiology, reproductive biology & aging.
🧵 What if one reason fertility declines with age isn’t just genetic-but mechanical?
Thrilled to share our new paper in @NatureCellBio:
Elevated contractility drives implantation failure in mouse embryos from aged females… here’s what we found 👇

Since the Lufhansa gear collapse is trending:
"A training captain of a Saab 340 was betting with his students that the weight-on-gear mechanism would prevent gear retraction while on the ground."
He lost the bet and the aircraft had to be written off.😳

Pretty sad newsreel on an accident with the Supermarine Scimitar.
This likely came before zero-zero ejection seats were available, and after they stopped landings with opened canopy (still done on very early naval jets).

Kokomo Murase just landed a backside triple cork 9π !
The first woman to do so.

Replying to @RetoPaul @MathMatize
Good point.
ω would be interesting too :)
Meanwhile I attach the BigAir radians chart
Franjo von Allmen wins his third Olympic Gold in the Super-G!
espn.com/olympics/story/_/id…
He is only the third guy ever to win three Olympic gold medals in skiing.
In terms of Swiss history, he has now surpassed Wilhelm Tell and Leonhard Euler.
Hopp Schwizz!

Radians would be much easier than degrees here.
Like Kokomo Murase did an 8pi jump to win the Big air event at the Olympics.
