Open the doors, HAL. Exile (1988), programmed by Peter Irvin and Jeremy Smith. Your goals are to explore the planet Phoebus after the crew of the starship Pericles goes missing, rescue any survivors, deal with Triax, and recover a key device (the Destinator) so you can leave. The original release included a novella that expanded the backstory. Yet another reason why physical games are superior to digital downloads! What really stood out were the physics: Gravity, inertia, mass, wind, water, explosions, and shockwaves all interact properly. Objects bounce, heavy items slow you down, and many puzzles emerge naturally from these rules. It is often cited as one of the earliest games with a genuine Newtonian physics model. There were also incredible early signs of game-AI: Creatures have behaviours, line-of-sight, reactions to noise, and even simple interactions with each other (e.g., birds that eat wasps, monkeys that can be fed). The world felt much more "alive" than most games of the era. Exile is an incredible sci-fi exploration game that felt years ahead of its time.
