The Liberal government wants to regulate natural health products like pharmaceutical drugs. Items you may have in your cupboard—like calcium, vitamin D, folic acid, probiotics, and others—are increasingly being swept up in the robust regulatory regime applied to pharmaceuticals. This means extraordinary additional costs that will harm Canadian health companies, and a reduction in the products regulated and sold in Canada. Ultimately, these changes will limit Canadians’ ability to manage their health as they choose. It will also push consumers to order products from U.S.—much to the benefit of their economy, and to the detriment of ours. On the basis of risk and proportionality, freedom to choose, and business viability in Canada, the Liberal approach is misinformed, and another nail in the coffin for natural health products in Canada.
