This week I started a new position covering politics for @denverpost. I’ll mostly be focused on the midterms before transitioning to statehouse coverage of the legislative session that starts in January.

UPDATE: DOJ mistakenly sent notification to Douglas County about plans for election monitoring, according to an email DOJ sent to Colorado’s top elections office.
DOJ now says it only has plans to monitor in Adams County on Election Day.
NEW: DOJ officials will monitor at least 2 metro Denver counties where hotly contested congressional races are playing out. Election monitoring is routine but has raised new concerns this cycle. More here:

Colorado’s Amendment 87 on the November ballot asks voters to make the biggest change to state income taxes in 40 years by shifting to a graduated tax and raising tax rates on the highest earners. denverpost.com/2026/10/03/co…
Prop 136 would prevent increases to Colorado’s 4.4% income tax rate in a bid to a competing proposal to raise taxes on high earners.

Colorado’s Sec of State has been on the front lines of political attacks over elections. How would candidates running for the office this Nov work to depoliticize the role — and to what extent is that possible?

Colorado landed a $240M federal grant to upgrade its energy grid, which Trump officials are touting as part of $1.9B in new grid investments.
The money comes from a bipartisan infrastructure law signed by former President Joe Biden, which Trump opposed.
