The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay.
Pillay is a South African jurist of Indian Tamil descent.
She defended anti-apartheid activists, presided over the UN tribunal for Rwanda, served as a judge on the International Criminal Court, was UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and chaired the UN inquiry into Israel and Gaza.
Pillay’s work on the Rwanda tribunal helped establish that rape can constitute an act of genocide.
Pillay headed the UN commission that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza. Her credibility was attacked by the Israeli government and various organizations that support the State of Israel.

Today is the anniversary of the founding of the German Democratic Republic (DDR).
In its 40 year history, the DDR rebuilt and fought to denazify East Germany, all while facing constant aggression, sabotage and propaganda from the West.
The DDR made significant achievements in terms of housing, education, health and full employment as well as women’s liberation while also playing a leading role in anti imperialist and anti colonial solidarity.
The promises of ‘reunification’ with West Germany in reality meant the destruction of these gains, widespread deindustrialisation, unemployment and poverty which continue to this day.
The experience of the DDR and the attempt to build socialism in East Germany provides valuable lessons for all communist parties in our time.
