this guy thinks the fact Taiwanese can protest against Chiang is some sort of mark against Chiang, when in fact the display of Mao's un-defaced picture all over China is a mark of a totalitarian society run by cowards who fear criticism.

The next 12-24 months will be a fascinating string of seemingly-pointless cyberattacks as nation states face use-it-or-lose-it decisions for the zero days they'd otherwise have saved for a strategic moment.
The Pentagon is treating a rash of freezer malfunctions that affected refrigeration and freezer units at commissaries at several U.S. military bases in August as a suspected cyberattack, according to four officials familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters. The Pentagon said a Cyber Command unit is “working in close coordination with interagency and law enforcement partners” in the ongoing investigation. At least six on base commissaries were affected in late August, per Reuters’ review of base social media posts. In at least one case, the cooling units’ temperatures were raised overnight, resulting in spoiled food. Fort Huachuca, Arizona, posted that its freezer “went into defrost mode where it heated up all the food.” One official said investigators have been in touch with French counterparts about a similar attack that hit more than 350 French supermarkets earlier this month. Her comments in the case are what’s getting the most attention, but she’s been having issues with erratic and bizarre behavior for months. I strongly suspect she’s been having a manic episode. ca5.uscourts.gov/docs/6993a1…

My jaw actually dropped
NEW UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATION: I spent several months investigating a nationwide network of advocacy organizations and medical providers helping families continue medically transitioning their children in defiance of state laws. My investigation centers on Campaign for Southern Equality (CSE), an LGBT advocacy nonprofit that connects families with cooperating medical providers across the country. CSE has distributed over $1 million in travel grants to more than 1,200 families, plus another $1 million to partner organizations, including funding for medical appointments. With CSE's knowledge, providers in its referral network told me the ways that they circumvent state restrictions on gender-transition treatments for minors. Some discussed using alternative diagnosis codes, such as “endocrine disorder,” to facilitate prescriptions or insurance coverage. Others described mailing medications directly to families' homes or sending prescriptions to pharmacies in states where these interventions are banned. Providers also discussed conducting virtual appointments with patients in those states. Others required patients to cross state lines for telehealth but did not appear to have a reliable method for verifying their physical location. My primary undercover scenario involved an 11-year-old girl in Tennessee who had only recently begun identifying as nonbinary, with no long history of gender-related distress. The providers I shared this scenario with seemed eager to treat her. Many indicated that puberty blockers could be prescribed after an initial evaluation lasting just one to several hours. My investigation uncovered practices that may violate state and federal laws and pose medical risks to children living hundreds or thousands of miles from their treating physicians. She *was* removed from the court. We know about all this because it was evidence in the proceedings to remove her from the bench.
A black judge dressed down a white lawyer because he's white. Textbook stuff that would get anyone else removed from the court and disbarred.

That's only true if you're saving cash (or canned goods) instead of putting money into equities. If there is a foreseeable shift in favor of capital's share of GDP, then investing is a really good idea.

One of several deeply weird things about this case is that Judge Brown is right-wing and Young, the Latino attorney whom Brown abused on the basis of anti-white racism, is extremely woke.
Chat, you may have seen the "black excellence" / "white mediocrity" quotes from Judge Ada Brown (currently suspended pending investigation) but the full hearing transcript has so much more 1/n

If Talarico wins it will be because Paxton was a ruinously flawed candidate who should not have been the nominee. Complaining about the voters is for losers.
If Talarico wins, which I still find unlikely, this will be why.

I see a ton of anti-Bass ads but basically no ads for Raman and her platform. I guess Raman did some focus groups and realized "throw out the dumbass who let the city burn" is a better pitch than "there aren't enough fent tents within 500 feet of your kid's elementary school."

1977-1998: no thoughts, opinions, or knowledge of John Cassavetes 1999: the singer from Bikini Kill sure seems to think this guy I've otherwise never heard of is a cultural touchstone 2000-2025: no thoughts, opinions, or knowledge of John Cassavetes 2026: PoliMath is right
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently? I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire. They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos. I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?

wild ruling out of Seattle that @PHLCouncil needs to read. a builder put $39M into 254 low-income apartments locked at 60% AMI for 30 years. from 2015 to 2018 it worked, collecting ~94% of rent. then Seattle stacked on "tenant protections": banned criminal background checks, banned winter evictions, required 180 days notice for rent hikes + 3 months relocation pay, and forced the owner to let unscreened roommates move in and take over leases. result: rent collections dropped from 93.9% to 44.1%!!! the building lost nearly $6M through 2023 ($2.7M in 2023 alone) and is now appraised as functionally worthless. the city bankrupted actual affordable housing lol. the appeals court just ruled the owner can sue Seattle for an unconstitutional taking. when you strip a landlord's right to screen, collect rent or remove non-paying tenants, it's not "regulation" anymore, you took the building…. Philly has half these laws already 🙄 courts.wa.gov/opinions/pdf/8…

I don't think advocating for reduced jail time for dangerous offenders is admirable *at all* I know someone who was killed by a repeat offender who *very clearly* should have been in jail for his much lesser offense I'm suspicious that people who advocate for leniency (and the judges who grant it) are getting high on their own moral superiority and not giving any thought to who this person might hurt next The ideal form of forgiveness is the black parishioners who forgave Dylan Roof for his murderous rampage against their friends and family and prayed for his soul. And then he was convicted and sentenced to death. nitter.cf/Driftwould2/status/211…

Imagine what kind of person sees this and thinks "wow, massive implications for search & rescue!"
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.
