The world's first cup of tea may have come from this mountainous region in southwest China. Yunnan Province and its surrounding areas have long been regarded as the birthplace of the tea plant. Recently, a genomic study published in Nature Genetics offered further evidence to support this view. After analyzing 1,325 Camellia samples, researchers found that southwest China was likely a key region in the origin and domestication of tea plants. Pu'er tea has been one of China's most popular teas over the past two decades. Compared with green tea and black tea, it is made from larger leaves and undergoes microbial fermentation during processing. In 2023, the Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of Jingmai Mountain (景迈山) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The tea trees here are not newly planted for tourism. Instead, they are part of a way of life that has continued for more than a thousand years, where forests, villages, tea gardens and people coexist on the same mountain. Some shade trees are preserved to provide the diffused light that tea plants prefer. In the old tea forests, trees such as osmanthus and camphor are either retained or planted, giving the tea forest more natural aromas while also helping suppress certain pests and diseases. In this living landscape, tea trees grow under taller forest trees, receiving the soft, diffused light they prefer. Osmanthus, camphor and other trees add natural aromas to the forest while helping keep pests away. Fallen leaves enrich the soil. Birds and insects help protect the tea trees. This natural farming method helps maintain the ecological balance of the old tea forests. Through this under-forest cultivation system, tea trees grow vigorously within a three-dimensional forest ecosystem. Over 5,000 people, primarily Blang and Dai ethnicities, are living in this mountain today. The Blang people are known for their tea-growing skills. You can even see tea-leaf decorations on their rooftops. By contrast, Dai (whose language and lifestyles share tremendous similarities with people in Thailand) rooftops are often decorated with ox-horn-shaped ornaments. The mountains in the distance mark the border with Myanmar. The taste of Pu'er is too strong for me. But it is that one cup can hold an entire landscape: forest, borderland, people, and more than a thousand years of living with nature.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp: I told the Israeli government from the beginning, maximum violence to the people organizing violence, minimal violence to the people on the front end. Andrew Ross Sorkin: Do you think that they lived up to that? Karp: You know, you, you, you, I could tell you, I feel that if, somewhat ill-modestly, if people listen to me more actively in Germany, on migration, on Israel, on these issues, and on lots of other things, we'd have a better world Sorkin: In other words, you don't think that they have done it as well as they should? Karp: Well, you know, it's, well, I'll put it this way. In a world where people didn't have so much derangement syndrome, I would, would be a lot more critical. In this world, I think you have to compare them to what, the competence level of any other country. And you say, yeah, these things are very hard and brutal, and watching these things happen is very difficult. But, you know, yeah, it's a very hard world, because in the end, we are in a world where the, there really aren't high-integrity partners on any side of the debate.

Agricultural land and tax base loss is the hidden sign of collapses historically. Two losses doomed the Western Roman Empire. Loss of North Africa and Cisalpine Gaul (modern Milan). Both were agricultural regions that support it, with a huge tax base. Which geopolitically is getting shot in the heart. You cant pay for troops or bureaucracy. A similar situation happened with the Eastern Romans with the loss of Egypt and the Balkans. Same with Persian Empires when they lose Iraq or Azerbaijan.
Both the Greeks and Romans were heavily influenced by Ancient Egypt in culture, religion and civics. North Africa was Rome's bread basket and main economic hub, the minute the Vandals took it the Western Empire went into a irreversible decline.

Evan, I am impressed by the plain-spoken finesse with which you express yourself. I commend you. As for your topic of discussion, here is my off-the-cuff commentary: My sense is that Russia has always struggled with elements in its society that look longingly to the "sophisticated west" and are rather easily enticed by its various charms and dissolute lifestyle — but they almost always do so weighed down by a persistent inferiority complex. My impression is that Russians are not naturally as treacherous or prone to extreme debauchery as, say, the British. But they are fast learners, and, if they stick with it for a while, they soon excel in all the ancient sins. In any case, they represent a more or less impotent minority of the Russian populace at this time. The majority clearly views matters as your report suggests: they perceive clearly and correctly that they are engaged in a great war with the Anglo-American empire and its motley crew of European vassal states. They have prosecuted this war with impressive patience and prudence, and over the course of four and a half years they have succeeded in wrecking, methodically attritting, or otherwise exposing as inefficacious the overwhelming majority of western armaments that have been brought to bear against them. The US/NATO has suffered, over the past 4+ years in Ukraine, the most consequential strategic defeat of the post-WW2 era. In conjunction with what has happened in West Asia over the past two and a half years, US/NATO/Israeli military capability has been decisively shattered. In 2024 and 2025, the Yemeni chased out of the Red Sea two successive American carrier strike groups. The US Navy was so traumatized by this experience that, earlier this year, when the USS George H. W. Bush was dispatched to the region, they did not dare transit the Red Sea, and instead took the long way around the tip of Africa in order to reach their destination in the Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, as a result of the February 28, 2026 US sneak attack on Iran, all US bases in the Persian Gulf region have been rendered untenable — several of them smashed good and hard; others simply vacated because they are no longer defensible. The US Navy's 5th Fleet has nowhere to make port within thousands of kilometers of their strike flotilla's current position. The fleet vacated its main base in Bahrain early in 2026. Since then, they have remained well distant from the Iranian coastline. And since the USS George Washington's September 5th close encounter with a new type of Iranian anti-ship missile, the fleet has moved even further distant, and the Bush ran away to Thailand. Fools believe the US controls the Strait of Hormuz. Fools believe the US retains sufficient military power in the region to inflict meaningful damage against Iran. Fools believe the US would not soon regret giving the Iranians another opportunity to strike back at them fully unrestrained. I am convinced the Iranians would like nothing so much as one last chance to avenge the IRIS Dena. In any case, the US/NATO/Israel militaries have been rendered incapable of meaningful offensive operations for at least the next decade. And they are utterly defenseless against Russian and Iranian long-range firepower. The entire panoply of American 20th century implements of war has proven to be shockingly anachronistic here in late 2026.

‼️ Is anyone else marveling at the apparent magazine depth of the Yemeni? Do they actually have the stockpile, logistics, and production capability sufficient to sustain the punishing missile campaign they are conducting against the KSA? If so, we have truly entered a new era.

One of the Houthis’ tactics is ambushing convoys on mined routes, opening fire with machine guns and a rain of mortars to create panic and turn the columns into easier targets. This has significantly slowed the advance of Saudi-backed troops, who, even with substantial air support, are struggling to consolidate positions. Clashes continue nonetheless, with casualties on both sides. The attacks on Saudi infrastructure are obviously worrying their allies in Yemen and lowering troop morale. But did the Houthis really mine routes in the desert? Who was the crazy one? Rommel did it, and he used ambush tactics very similar to these. As I said earlier, any real pacification of the region depends on an understanding between Trump and the IRGC, which is unlikely. Everyone else is a secondary actor. The Saudis don’t have enough bombs or interceptors for a conflict lasting months. Even if they did, it wouldn’t change much. The chances of intercepting saturated waves of drones plus more than one type of missile are not high. But even if the Saudis decided to go all-in against the Houthis, mobilize their own army, add another 250,000 men to the front, and get drawn into a deeper war, what would Saudi Arabia actually gain? That equation doesn’t add up for me.
