wrapping up my first SF tech week! 🙌 had a lot of great convos with people working in AI infra and AI Payments. Here are some of my takeaways:
1. The agent economy is the last piece of the puzzle. Agents can already reason, plan and act, but to get real tasks done they have to pay for their own data, tools and inference. If they can’t pay, they don’t really have agency.
2. Micropayments and purchases are two different problems. A $0.001 API call needs speed and near-zero friction. A $100 purchase needs identity, approvals, refunds, and dispute resolution. These are fundamentally different problems, and one stack may not serve both well.
3. Trust is the next bottleneck. More conversations are shifting toward trust/privacy/fraud. Once agents can pay, we still need answers to basic questions: Who does the agent belong to? Was the work actually delivered? Who takes the loss when something goes wrong?
4. The infra is ready, but the killer use case is still missing. I had this sense that AI payment infrastructure is developing faster than demand for agent-initiated purchases (my unpopular opinion). Today the real volume comes from agents paying for APIs and data. But when it comes to consumer use cases, would you let your agent buy your shoes or book your a trip? And maybe shopping is one thing we want to keep human-in-the-loop. After all, part of the fun is choosing what to buy.
