The cliff catches your eye. The story makes you stay.
This is Paro Taktsang—Tiger’s Nest—in Bhutan: white walls, dark timber, and copper-colored roofs gathered against an immense rock face above the forest.
From a distance, the monastery seems almost weightless. Look closer, and individual windows, roof edges, and narrow ledges begin to emerge.
Its story reaches beyond the spectacular setting.
According to Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave. The famous cliffside temple was built centuries later, in 1692–1694, around a place already held sacred.
A devastating fire in 1998 and the reconstruction that followed added another chapter. The beauty we admire also carries a history of loss, care, and renewal.
For The World, Slowly, this is where a remarkable view becomes a deeper story: a landscape shaped not only by rock and forest, but by what people remember and return to.
Would you be drawn here first by the mountain, the architecture, or the story behind the name?
