President Trump says importing more foreign beef will bring prices down. I understand the goal but why is the “America First” answer to expensive beef: more FOREIGN beef? We have American ranchers READY to feed American families. The problem is that federal rules and a highly consolidated meatpacking industry make it unnecessarily difficult for smaller producers to process their cattle and sell that beef directly to people in their own communities. Congressman Thomas Massie’s PRIME Act offers a more structural solution: let states allow locally raised meat processed at qualifying local facilities to be sold directly to consumers, restaurants and grocery stores WITHOUT forcing every small farmer through the same expensive federal system built for industrial meatpackers. Would the PRIME Act lower every beef price overnight? No. America’s cattle herd is still historically small, and rebuilding it takes time. But it WOULD open another path between American ranchers and American consumers, expand local processing and reduce dependence on corporate middlemen. Importing beef may provide TEMPORARY price relief. Passing the PRIME Act would help build the decentralized American food system MAHA has been promising. Before IMPORTING the solution, have we REMOVED the barriers preventing American farmers from becoming the solution?
