Staff at the official paper of the U.S. military is taking a stand for journalistic independence and integrity. Huzzah.

The fact that they’re actively being fired and replaced as retaliation is cause for alarm.

Smith: For nearly three decades I have been a career prosecutor. I have served during both Republican and Democratic administrations and I've been guided by those principles in every role I've held. I continued to honor those principles when I was appointed to serve as special counsel in November of 2022. The decision to bring charges against President Trump was mine, but the basis for those charges rests entirely with President Trump and his actions, as alleged in the indictments returned by grand juries in two different districts. Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 election and to prevent the lawful transfer of power. Our investigation also developed powerful evidence that showed that President Trump willfully retained highly classified documents after he left office in January of 2021, storing them at his social club, including in a ballroom and a bathroom. He then repeatedly tried to obstruct justice to conceal his continued retention of those documents. I remain grateful for the counsel, judgment, and advice of my team as I executed my responsibilities. I am both saddened and angered that President Trump has sought revenge against career prosecutors, FBI agents, and support staff simply for doing their jobs and for having worked on those cases. These dedicated public servants are the best of us, and they have been wrongly vilified and improperly dismissed from their jobs. I made my decisions in the investigation without regard to President Trump's political association, activities, beliefs, or candidacy in the 2024 Presidential election. We took our actions based on the facts and the law, the very lessons I learned early in my career as a prosecutor. We followed Justice Department policies and observed legal requirements. The timing and speed of our work reflects the strength of the evidence and our confidence that we would have secured convictions at trial. If asked whether to prosecute a former President based on the same facts today, I would do so regardless of whether that President was a Republican or a Democrat.

By far the most disturbing ICE video I’ve seen from Evanston, IL today. An ICE agent points his gun at unarmed citizens. Twice. Then, he goes around the SUV, drops to his knees, and presses his full weight onto a man’s back. Moments later, that same man’s head is beaten into the pavement while the agent holds his head down. When they finally pull him up, his face is swollen and dazed… clearly concussed… and then they slam his head into the SUV and pin it there with their shoulder. You can’t watch this and call it law enforcement. This is excessive force and criminal assault.

Excellent reporting here by @ShomikMukherjee, formerly of the @eurekaTS.
NEW: Spent the past few weeks trying to verify key details of some weighty allegations lodged by Oakland mayoral candidate Renia Webb against her former boss, Sheng Thao. It's a strange story. And the facts don't seem to add up. (free link, no paywall): eastbaytimes.com/2025/02/02/…

Here is a short video of one of the 1st Klamath River salmon to make it to the tributaries above the former Iron Gate Dam. The clip was recorded last Friday by Yurok Fisheries Dept Geologist Kayah Ray, who is part of a team surveying salmon in the newly undammed river reach.

Here are overhead photos of crews dismantling the Klamath River dams on Saturday. The removal of the dams is the first part of a long-term plan to restore the river ecosystem and all the life it supports. #native #salmon #restoration

The Klamath River is experiencing an amazing transformation. The remaining 3 of 4 dams are coming down. This winter, Yurok crews hand planted 8.5 tons of native seeds in the former reservoirs. Now, an array of locally adapted wildflowers & grasses cover much of the clay soil.

Yesterday was one of the top three wettest days on record for May in Eureka. 1.99 inches of rain was recorded on Woodley Island on May 4th, breaking the previous record for the date, and coming in just short of the record for any calendar day in May.

Even if EVERY SINGLE ONE of the 32 trans athletes playing NCAA championship sports identified as women… It means that 1 in 10,000 — or .0001416 of the 226,212 women college athletes—are trans. For comparison, during SC’s championship run: Cops killed 2x more UNARMED Black people. 1500x more died from gunshot wounds. 30 million kids attended underfunded schools. Guess which issue US legislatures have passed laws to address?
I asked South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley if she supports transgender women (biological males) playing women's college basketball. "If you consider yourself a woman and you want to play sports or vice versa, you should be able to play."

Climate change certainly isn’t boring! More to come!
NEW: California is getting wrecked by a massive snow storm with winds reaching up to 190mph and estimates of more than 10 feet of snow. The conditions were so bad that hundreds of vehicles got stuck overnight on the I-80. Some reports estimate that the weekend snowfall will reach 12 feet with *another* couple feet expected early next week.

I shoulda gone into hospital PR so I could write sentences like this: "Outpatient laboratory services ... are focused on outreach lab services that support testing and diagnostic services that are necessary, but do not need to be provided by a hospital laboratory."

My go-to, which involves a poor imitation of a dyspeptic New Yorker, is a loud and nasal, “SHAAADUP!” 95% effective.
You should SHAME people speaking in theaters. Don’t suffer through it then complain online after. My go to is “Are you going to talk the entire time or just the first part? I just want to know.” Works every time. Don’t feel comfortable doing that? Grab an employee!

I’ve spent much of this year learning about car bloat, the process through which smaller vehicles are being replaced by increasingly massive SUVs and trucks. What I’ve learned: Huge cars are terrible for society, often in ways that are hidden. A summary 🧵
