Most homes are either Frankenstein’d or wayy too safe @hanslorei does a great job explaining the way out of that pickle.
As the the cause, I have lots of theories:
1. People design around resale now not their own quirks and interests.
2. Loss of craftsmen: we don’t have as many experts in niche trades so contractors take the reins when an architect or niche expert would have previously had more say
3. Cost: I don’t know what the numbers say but it seems that labor (and high end material is much more expensive. Disagree on the take @david_perell mentioned on the high end. I think a higher proportion of expensive homes are likely innovative, though still not enough.
There's a blandness to contemporary architecture. Sure, it can be sleek and impressive, but so much of it is ultimately boring.
Whenever I bring this up, people default to the same defense: “Well, interesting architecture is expensive.” But that argument breaks down when you watch shows like Selling Sunset, where even $40 million homes are covered with the same white walls, right angles, marble islands, grey-scale colors, and a lack of cornices or any ornamentation whatsoever.
All this to say that the lack of character in contemporary design isn't ultimately a cost problem. If it were, the world's wealthiest people wouldn't end up in interchangeable white boxes.
Many people prefer this dominant style. And that's fine! My problem isn't with the style itself, but with the fact that it's increasingly the only option available. A thriving civilization should have an expansion of offerings, not a contraction of them. But the market has converged on a single aesthetic.
Just recently, a New York real estate agent said to me: "If you want an apartment with character, you're going to have to look for one built before World War II."
"So you're saying that almost nothing built in the past 80 years has character?"
"Yep, yep... that's right."
I’m a bit lazy.
Some might say efficient if they were nice.
Over the past decade I've baked automation and AI into everything I do. Saving my co’s and teams 6-7 figures.
AI is all the hype, but:
- technical people don’t know how to apply it
- business people don’t understand it
So back in July around the birth of our second girl, I started working with organizations on training and advising for AI / Automation, sharing the frameworks and learnings I’ve leveraged for the past 11 years (3 for AI)
More to come.

Well put and painfully true.

One of the most dangerous trends I've noticed in the last decade is the increasing tendency to believe that if someone disagrees with your political opinions, they're not merely mistaken, but evil.

If anyone had a right to question whether our democracy was worth redeeming, it was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Because in the face of billy clubs and lynchings, poll taxes and literacy tests, he never gave in to violence, never waved a traitorous flag or gave up on our country.
