Sept 2022 Leak from Cabinet to The Examiner There has been bad blood between Harris & O'Donovan since the infamous leak of the Zappone appointment from cabinet. Matt Carthy accused Simon Harris of leaking Zappone appointment from Cabinet. Harris said he was considering lodging complaint. (he never did😉) FG Minister Patrick O’Donovan boasted to colleagues he engaged in sting operation to catch leaker 🕵🏻‍♂️ #HowIrelandWorks #Harrised

Harrised Tánaiste denies asking Patrick O’Donovan to resign after phone call before minister fell ill✍️ Louise Burne Simon Harris dismissed reports of a tense exchange, denied briefing a newspaper about the minister and said his return would depend on medical advice It was reported that the phone call was fractious and took place shortly after Mr O’Donovan told reporters that commentary about his illness in The Sunday Times was the “ultimate betrayal”. Mr Harris said briefings in The Sunday Times had “caused hurt”. However, he denied briefing the newspaper. “Clearly, it wasn't me, I'm the leader of Fine Gael, and I don't need to brief journalists to make things happen in my party,” the Tánaiste said. #PhonecallGate #SimonHarris #PatrickODonovan irishexaminer.com/news/polit…

I pleaded with @SimonHarrisTD @HMcEntee for the penalisation to stop in @IrishPrisons but silencing whistleblowers & protecting the culpable was more important than accepting the truth. They are nothing but media trained puppets, speaking from both sides of their mouth to spin a sound bite. #WeWillNotBeSilenced #HowIrelandWorks

Reading today’s Irish Mail on Sunday interview with former Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe, I was struck by his concerns that little has changed in how those who speak out about wrongdoing are treated. Maurice McCabe has endured more than most people could imagine, yet he continues to speak out on behalf of other whistleblowers who find themselves facing similar difficulties. His comments should concern everyone who believes in transparency, accountability and the right of workers to report wrongdoing without fear of retaliation. This is not just an issue within An Garda Síochána, nor is it confined to the public sector. Whistleblowers across our health service, the Defence Forces, the Prison Service, education, charities, voluntary organisations and the private sector have raised serious concerns about how they have been treated after making protected disclosures. Regardless of where a person works, they should be entitled to the same effective protections when reporting wrongdoing. Having legislation in place is one thing. Ensuring that it actually protects those who speak out is another. Earlier this week, I had the privilege of accompanying Professor Dympna Waldron, alongside Helen Mc Mahon, to a meeting with Labour Party leader @ivanabacik to discuss the review of the Protected Disclosures Act. I want to acknowledge Ivana’s willingness to listen directly to the experiences and concerns of whistleblowers. To the best of my knowledge, @ivanabacik is the first political party leader to engage directly with whistleblowers on the review of the Protected Disclosures Act. I believe this is an important development, and I sincerely hope other political party leaders will follow her example. During the meeting, we raised concerns about the effectiveness of the current legislation, the need for genuinely independent investigations, stronger accountability for penalisation and retaliation, and access to independent, publicly funded legal advice and representation for whistleblowers. I also believe that whistleblowers themselves must have a meaningful role in reviewing the legislation. Who better to identify its shortcomings than those who have experienced the consequences of speaking out? For too long, many whistleblowers in both the public and private sectors have found themselves fighting to protect their reputations, livelihoods and families, often at considerable personal and financial cost. Whistleblowers are not looking for special treatment. They are looking for fair treatment, proper investigations, accountability and the protection the law is supposed to provide. Maurice McCabe’s interview is another reminder of why this review matters. I hope all political parties will engage directly with whistleblowers from both the public and private sectors and listen carefully to their experiences before decisions are made about the future of the legislation. The real test of the Protected Disclosures Act is not what it promises on paper, but what happens to a person after they have the courage to speak out. Scoliosis Spina-bifida Scandal Only 1 TD from Fianna Fáil and 1 TD from Fine Gael spoke about the total collapse of healthcare services for children with scoliosis and spina-bifida in this afternoon's debate on forthcoming Inquiry. Not 1 member of the Lowry Lackeys made a contribution. They can fill the Dáil chamber when they are doing away with the Triple-lock, but can't turn up for Ireland’s Children, including Harvey Morrison Sherratt who lost his life waiting for spinal surgery [RIP] We don't get angry enough. #JusticeforHarvey #BackUs

Proposed Investigation into the treatment of children with scoliosis and spina bifida at Children's Health Ireland (CHI) ⚖️Which way to go for the truth and justice? Consideration should be given to the following: 1. A Tribunal of Inquiry has stronger powers to compel a witness from outside of Ireland to attend and give evidence under the Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) legislation. Whereas: 2. Under section 16 of the Commissions of Investigation Act 2004, a Commission of Investigation does not have the same powers to compel a person resident in another country such as the USA to attend and give evidence. Therefore the opposition's position that a Commission of Investigation is architecturally weaker and flawed are critical points. The same points the families & advocates have repeatedly made. #CHI #BackUs
AN IRISH surgeon who implanted non-medical grade springs in young patients is now working in the US, the Dáil has heard Dr Connor Greene, who took voluntary leave from Temple Street hospital in Dublin from 2023, is listed as a staff member on the website of Life- Bridge Health, in Baltimore. @irishdailymail @muirisoc #CHI #BackUs

It's a Cover-Up On-going scandal into treatment of children with scoliosis & spina-bifida. The Strategy of the government is NOT to seek the truth. The timeframe of this investigation by the government dodges the time of Simon Harris's time in Health. When the story falls off the front pages, the government dilutes promises made. @Toibin1 #BackUs #JusticeforHarvey #CHI #Scoliosis #Spinabifida

I know there is a lot going on, but @SimonHarrisTD is trying to exclude his failing in the Department of Health concerning children with scoliosis and spina-bifida from the Inquiry into services for those children. Despite the commitments made after being shamed into a meeting with the parents of Harvey Morrison Sherratt and the @scolionetwork & @SBH_PAG families, the Minister for Health @CarrollJennifer is still to establish mediation to agree Terms of Reference for an Inquiry. Why, for once, can this government not put the children and their families first over powerful vested interests. They've been fighting endlessly for years, just to find out the Truth. At the very least, an Independent mediation process should be put into place. Don't let them get away with their attemped cover-up! #JusticeforHarvey #BackUs
A gentle reminder - “by the end of this year (2017) no child will wait longer for a scoliosis procedure than 4 months”. Aug 2018 and children continue to languish on lists. Do you still feel ashamed @SimonHarrisTD ?

Now where have we heard things like this before @SimonHarrisTD @CarrollJennifer
The Minister and the Protected Disclosure Email 🤔 Minister claims she wasn’t aware of shock whistleblower allegations about why Harvey Sherratt was taken off op wait list - Adam Higgins Harvey Morrison Sherratt, who died in July aged nine, was cut from the scoliosis surgery list without the knowledge of his parents The claims were detailed in a public disclosure, seen by The Irish Sun, that was sent and addressed directly to Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill in August. But a spokesperson for the Health Minister today told us she was unaware of the allegations made by the #CHI whistleblower until last week

A can of worms … one they do not want opened @CHI_Ireland @CarrollJennifer @SimonHarrisTD @MichealMartinTD Serious questions about governance and oversight in @CHI_Ireland when non-medical springs could enter operating theatres and be implanted in children. Then look at VBT, described by CHI itself as an experimental technique Introduced without ethical approval, no dedicated HIPE code, procedures recorded as spinal fusion, no functioning spinal register to systematically track outcomes, and no procedure-specific patient information leaflets. @CeoHardiman #LucyNugent Who authorised these procedures? Who was responsible for oversight? How were complications and long-term outcomes monitored? @AnneOConnorIRL #TribunalofInquiry #BackUs #JusticeForHarvey @SBH_PAG
Concern re absence of ethical approval for novel scoliosis technique used on 22 children between 2017-2024. Today, I wrote and appealed directly to @CarrollJennifer and @SimonHarrisTD with regards to Mr. Farrell SC’s recommendations and the acceptance of his Scoping Report. Focusing on the Spinal Surgery recommendations, as the pathway that impacted my family; there are several things that are VERY concerning that will not be investigated. The only recommendation that Mr. Farrell made was “Inquire into whether the management of CHI were aware of the use or intended use of the non-CE marked springs in surgeries undertaken at Temple Street Hospital by Consultant A between 2020 and 2022”. It does not look at many other things that I outlined to the Minister (letter below). I drew the Minister's attention to a very concerning example of something which will not be investigated if she accepts the current recommendations. I explained how, in January of 2026, a Temple Street Orthopaedic Consultant who is currently under Independent Review was a co-author on a paper entitled “Screw-Less U-Rod Pelvic Fixation in Early-Onset Scoliosis”. This publication is a retrospective analysis on a surgical technique which was carried out on 22 patients in CHI Temple Street between 2017 and 2024. I am not a clinician, but I am a scientist! Upon reading the paper I noted the wording "At our institution, 22 patients with early-onset scoliosis underwent spinal growing-rod insertion with the U-rod construct between 2017 and 2024. Local ethics committee approval was granted for this study (REC-598-25). I noted that the procedures were carried out 2017-2024 but the ethics approval number is dated 25…. indicative of 2025 approval. The author confirmed ethical approval was for a retrospective review of the notes and x-rays only, but not the original technique. Since the 14th of September CHI Ethics Committee and the National Office for Research Ethics Committees have not responded to my requests for the ethical approval number for introduction of this new device/technique in 2017. Although this Screwless U clamp construct to secure rods for the correction of scoliosis in very young patients was a ‘development’ on previously used techniques, it was novel in CHI Temple Street in 2017, designed in collaboration with the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University College Dublin. HSE Ethics Requirements state that ethical oversight, even at a local governance level by CHI, is required when a procedure is investigating the safety or efficacy of non-established therapy, device or drug treatment; when it involves any clinically significant departure from usual clinical care, or the use of any untested intervention - clinical or system within Ireland. I explained to the Minister, that this paper is in the public domain and that I was drawing her attention to something that has the potential to be ‘as scandalous’ as ‘the springs issue’-for which parents are, today, having to support children from 2-11 years of age as a result of pain which continues to be actively ignored by @CHI_Ireland I asked that she might pause, reflect and think “these parents and children have all been through enough, much more information has been brought to her over the last few weeks since the Scoping Report was published, the recommendations that have been made-especially in regard to Scoliosis Surgery will not answer the majority’s concerns. So, that she does not outright accept the Scoping Recommendations, but sees them as a starting point. To sit down with the parents & develop the steps forward from there”. Will the Minister continue to defend & accept the recommendations from the Scoping Report, in full, which ultimately means that she will be ignoring this raised concern of additional procedures carried out between 2017 & 2024 possibly without appropriate oversight and definitely resulting life-altering implications for children in Ireland?

In 2017, @SimonHarrisTD promised no child would wait longer than 4 months for #scoliosis surgery. Yet the proposed inquiry starts in 2019, excluding scrutiny of that commitment and the decisions made before then. @CarrollJennifer Our children deserve a Public Tribunal of Inquiry with a timeframe that reflects the history of these failures. @MichealMartinTD Why 2019? Protect our children, not Simon Harris’s political career. #PublicTribunalNow #JusticeForHarvey #BackUs @SBH_PAG

Nellie Lannen was five years old when she underwent spinal surgery at @CHI_Ireland Temple Street in October 2020. She has spinal muscular atrophy type 1 and severe kyphosis. According to the court proceedings and RTÉ investigation: Uncertified springs were incorporated into spinal rods implanted along both sides of her spine. Five days after the initial operation, she required further surgery after the implant system on one side fractured her pelvis. She subsequently experienced repeated infections, metalwork protruding through her skin and severe pain. She underwent 14 additional procedures between 2020 and 2023. The original kyphosis was not corrected. The court heard that her health had deteriorated to the extent that the alternative surgery she should have received was now considered too risky. Her life expectancy was reported to have been shortened. Public Statutory Inquiry now @CarrollJennifer @SimonHarrisTD #BackUs #JusticeForHarvey #PublicInquiryNOW

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, a cause so close to my heart. 💗 So this is a little reminder to be familiar with your ‘normal’ and if you notice any changes, make that appointment or call a friend to help. Near or far, so many people are part of your story as you are part of mine. Xx
