Exports remain the engine of UK vehicle manufacturing, with 75.3% of September's output destined for overseas markets.
The EU remained the largest destination, taking 57.5% of car exports, while shipments to the US and China rose strongly.
Maintaining frictionless trade is essential to safeguard jobs, investment and growth in this export-led sector.

Electrified vehicle production rose 22.5% in September, accounting for 42.3% of all UK car output and more than 70% of exports.
The industry has invested £14.3bn in UK EV plants and models since 2020, but unrealistic EV sales targets continue to divert billions into incentives rather than competitiveness, innovation and future investment.

UK factories have built 564,537 cars and CVs in the first nine months of 2026, a year-on-year decline of -3.0%. Output is forecast to recover to 752,000 units in 2027 as new models, mostly electric, enter production.
That recovery, however, is at risk from three major threats to competitiveness, including the EU's 'Made in Europe' proposals and rules of origin tariffs that would severely damage industry on both sides of the Channel.
Meanwhile, the UK's unrealistic EV sales targets are eroding profitability, diverting resources and undermining Britain's attractiveness a place to invest.

UK vehicle production rose by 36.3% to 74,031 units in September – the largest growth since August 2022, partly reflecting the impact of an unprecedented cyber incident in September last year.
However, car production increased by 38.6% with 70,831 units rolling off factory lines, making it the strongest September for UK car manufacturing since 2023.
