Wednesday night I sat in row 9 with my two boys and watched the Maccabiah open in Jerusalem. If you've never heard of it, think Jewish Olympics. Every four years Jewish athletes from all over the world fly to Israel to compete, tens of thousands packed into the stadium. It's one of the biggest gatherings of the Jewish world there is. I spent a lot of the night counting flags, because a lot of them weren't there. Austria sent one athlete. One. Belgium barely more. Australia normally sends one of the biggest teams in the whole thing and this year basically didn't come. Their delegation was around 300 athletes who'd trained two years. They pulled out. The reason surprised me, and I want to get it right. No government banned anyone from flying to Israel. What a bunch of Western governments did was put their travel warning at the top level, "do not travel." That sounds like just advice. It's not. It voids your travel insurance, and with no insurance a national team legally can't fly. No cover, no team. So nobody was forbidden. The paperwork handled it. And they cut the kids first. Britain, Canada and South Africa pulled their youth teams before anything else. The same thing is happening to Jewish teen trips to Israel across the board right now, all on the same insurance logic. Those trips are how a kid in Manchester or Melbourne actually gets tied to Israel and to the rest of the Jewish world. You cancel the trip, you don't lose a summer. You lose the kid. The first time these games were held after the Holocaust, in 1950, the stadium was full of empty spaces too. Most of European Jewry had been murdered. The survivors were stuck behind the Iron Curtain, banned by their own governments from coming. You could look at who marched in and basically see where the Jewish people had been wiped out and where it was growing back. I was doing that same math Wednesday. Only this time the people missing are alive, free, and would give anything to be here. A form kept them home. Somewhere in Sydney there's a Jewish dad who wanted to give his kids the exact night I just gave mine. A risk department said no. I wrote the whole thing up, including the guys who rode motorcycles from Tel Aviv across Europe in 1930 to go round up athletes for the first games, and why 1950 actually leaves me hopeful: 👇🇮🇱✡️

Many people are wondering about what’s happening on U.S. campuses. While I can’t speak about all other college campuses, I can definitely give you an insider’s view about @Columbia University. (this thread may be a bit long, but trust me: it's worth it)

🧵Critical Thread. Close review of Gaza casualty figures reported by UN OCHA based on daily Hamas “Ministry of Health” numbers proves they are FALSIFIED. Women & children are grossly inflated. This is easily proven but media ignores. See detailed expose below: 1/

🧵+972 magazine article making rounds, widely cited by likes of @ilhanMN @kenroth & others, yet another version of (1) Israel is a war criminal deliberately targeting civilians (2) Israeli is bloodthirsty not caring about killing kids. Long thread which tears article apart: 1/

🧵Claimed words by IDF spokesman Hagari: “The emphasis is on damage and not on accuracy” have been falsely quoted worldwide as proof that Israel bombs Gaza indiscriminately, part of a campaign to claim genocidal intent. HonestReporting investigated; read for detail: 1/

I dont know what is more horrifying; watching the violent massacre committed by Hamas, or watching Owen Jones casually use that very same footage to debunk claims of rape, torture and child killing.

Mr Jenrick, No mention has been made of weddings. My son's wedding has been delayed for 2 months. Is there any indication you can give as to when weddings would be allowed? Thank you.
As lockdown continues, weddings shouldn't be postponed indefinitely. They are too important!

This sounds promising. My brother's wedding was scheduled 2 days after the PM announced lockdown, we are Orthodox Jews and his bride lives in Manchester. He is desparate to be allowed to get married. When can he hope to have the wedding?
I want to underline that @RobertJenrick, @mhclg officials + I are engaging with ALL major faith groups to inform this new #Covid19UK taskforce. Thanks to Chaya Spitz, @ShulemStern, +@jccnorthlondon for explaining the specific needs of the Charedi community regarding weddings.

He wouldn't give the number @PaulKimmage ? Or he didn't have the number? Get your facts straight.
"The Times the official organ of Team Sky" says Kimmage. Perhaps a bit of bitterness there, no bias Paul?

Kimmage compare the sport now to Armstrong's time Step too far. Comparing Froome to Armstrong, simply based on his eyes. Why bother?
"Very interesting diary" Kimmage referring to the Secret Pro.. Hmm.
"Froome has retained this extraordinary freshness from the start?" Ehm, you sure about that Paul??
Kimmage: "maybe I'm a bit simple?" Hmmm...
He was incredible last year on the climbs and is amazingly versatile. His National Champs win shows he is going to be in terrific form.

I don't quite get all this Nibali underestimation for the Tour. His Giro win was easily better than Quintana's last year. 1/2
