Unpopular opinion of the day: yes, some bits of the State Opening of Parliament seem strange and quite funny BUT those things aren't *just* the result of 'tradition'- they're also the result of/reflect some v important historic events and fundamental constitutional principles!

Such a privilege to be part of this CST special issue... Which will make important interventions in fields of critical terrorism studies/critical security studies, and which @Sarah_Gharib and @RabeaMKhan have guided to fruition with such wisdom, care, and composure 👏🙏 /1

Today the Speaker should tell the parties how many Select Committees they will get to Chair. This is worked out in proportion to how many seats each party gained. The Whips will then agree which Committees each party will lead, but this may not be announced for a while 1/4

Exc (and free to read this weekend!):
Labour manifesto will commit to introducing an age limit on serving peers.
House of Lords will be scaled back by forcing peers to retire at age 80, or at the end of the parliament in which they reach that age.
It's part of a two-phased approach to Lords reform. There will be some immediate measures, such as banning new hereditary peers. Others will be longer term and not guaranteed within 5 years.

Not the most important constitutional point perhaps but there are a lot of MPs saying this today. But they are still MPs until Thursday! Parliament has prorogued (business is suspended). It dissolves on Thursday 30th after which the statutory 25-day election count-down kicks in.
