From bare floors to brighter future: Governor Abba’s giant strides in rebuilding basic education, securing Kano’s prosperity - Sadiq Bala Jibril Classrooms built, Desks delivered, Teachers recruited, A state betting everything on its children. Picture a Kano classroom not so long ago; A leaking roof, A cracked wall, Forty children on a bare floor, and a teacher shouting over the rain. The state government puts the number of pupils who sat on floors like that at some 4.7 million when the administration of HE. Abba Kabir Yusuf took office. That figure is not just a statistic; it is a generation of children asked to build a future on the ground. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf refused to accept it, on assumption of office, He declared a state of emergency on education, critics called it a slogan, Parents called it a long-overdue answer. Over 3 years on, the verdict is not in a speech but It is in the school compounds, where anyone can stand and count and the improved assimilation of learning by an average Kano pupil. Start with the walls; More than 1,800 new classrooms have been constructed by the Administration of HE. Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Dangwauro to Dansudu Primary School in Tofa to the junior secondary school at Jogana in Gezawa. Another 2,500 or even more have been renovated, brought back from the edge of collapse. For many communities, that restored block is the only school the children have ever known, and it is standing again. Then come the desks; More than 80,000 desks, chairs and furniture units have been delivered, because a child cannot write with a notebook on his or her knees. Boreholes bring water and solar lighting keeps lessons going when the power fails, Textbooks, uniforms and learning materials arrive at schools so that poverty never again decides who gets to learn and why. Behind every classroom stands a teacher, and this government has backed them, Education has taken the largest portion of the state budget in both 2024, 2025 and 2026 one of the largest shares in the country. More than 16,000 teachers have been recruited, and promotions have been approved for more than 20,000 teaching and non-teaching staff, a school is only as strong as the people at the front of the room, and Kano is investing in them heavily. Here is the part that rarely makes headlines, and it matter most; More than 7,000 public basic schools have been placed under government proper care. Nigeria’s story is full of projects commissioned with fanfare and abandoned within a decade, this administration is promising to look after what it builds, and maintenance is the quiet proof of seriousness that leads to sustainability and sustainable development. To ensure all-inclusive and equal access as well as reduce out-of-school children due to special needs, Sign-language materials have reached pupils at Tudun Maliki Special School, an accelerated programme is pulling vulnerable and out-of-school children back into learning. The programme reaches all 484 wards, because a child’s village should never decide the quality of the school He or she walks into. Critics ask the fair question: are buildings the same as learning? No, and no honest person says they are, but no child learns to read in a room that does not exist. Infrastructure is the first chapter, not the whole book, the next chapters are results: attendance, enrolment, literacy, children moving on to secondary school – Kano is entitled to demand them, and the government should publish them proudly. Because this is about more than classrooms. A literate girl becomes a skilled woman, a boy who finishes school becomes a worker, a trader, a builder, an innovator. Every child kept in school is one more citizen who adds to the economy a value and leaves the cycle of Abject poverty. That is how a state secures a prosperous future: not with one ribbon-cutting, but with one educated generation after another.

Sacrosanct is, Kano has not finished, But the direction is clear and the proof stands in all 44 local governments, 484 wards. Now parents must enrol their children and keep them in school, communities must guard what has been built, and leaders must keep the promise long after the cameras leave. A child at a desk, under a sound roof, with a book in his or her hands and a teacher in front of him or her, is a child with a future. That is what “Kano First” looks like for HE. Abba Kabir Yusuf and any reasonable Bakano. It is how a greater Kano gets built, one classroom at a time.
