Hong Kong is an interesting mix. It is very Oriental, yet the colonial legacy is visible. Whites (Engish, French, America, Australia) are <1% of the population, yet seem disproportionately represented in corporate leadership and sports like rugby (I’ve worked with many of them)

Bangladesh doesn’t have a multi-billion-dollar IT export engine like India does. Bangladesh doesn’t have a massive petrochemical industry like India does. Bangladesh doesn’t have global-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing like India does. Bangladesh doesn’t have high-capacity oil refining infrastructure like India does. Bangladesh doesn’t have heavy machinery or capital goods sectors like India does. And yet, with ready-made garment exports alone, it has been able to catch up to India in per capita GDP, if not periodically exceed it.

Also GDP/capita isn’t wealth or living standards. Guyana has GDP/capita numbers like Korea and Japan, but we know how Georgetown still looks; a guy in Guangdong in China on lower GDP/capita can have 10x the lifestyle, infrastructure & opportunity. Wealth ≠ one headline number.
