MY THOUGHTS ON DUNE: PART THREE (2026) What makes Paul Atreides’ trajectory across the Dune saga terrifying isn’t that he falls to evil; it’s that his entire rise to power was a trap he saw coming and walked into anyway. Most heroic journeys end with the savior liberating his people and restoring order. Paul’s arc completely subverts that trope by showing that the moment he embraced his status as the "Muad'Dib," he surrendered his own agency to a galactic Jihad that killed tens of billions in his name. He didn't seize control of the universe he became a prisoner of his own myth. By the time the story reaches Messiah, the tragic reality of Paul's victory is impossible to ignore. He sits on a throne built on fanaticism, acutely aware that the holy war fought in his name was completely out of his control. Every vision, every political move, and every attempt to alter the timeline only locked him tighter into a fatalistic path. He is a god to his followers, but psychologically, he is a broken shell forced to watch the horrors of his own legacy unfold without the power to stop them.
