Shoutout October 2026, when life-eating creative achievements of impossible narrative/ludic ambition descended upon me—each in four parts

going to be such an interesting release. I trust Evil Empire on combat; my memories of Dead Cells biomes like the Sepulcher & Clock Tower stand out a lot more than my time w/ the 2D CV games that aren't Rondo, SotN, or Dracula's Curse (1/x)

on the one hand I don't think recent fans of the "lore"--who could possibly care?--have done their diligence with the gameplay friction of stuff like OoE, CotM, or HoD; on the other, I'd agree w/ them that something seems off, maybe even bland, about the BC? (2/)

In this context, seeing the more dedicated crowd testing sequence-breaks in this demo is reassuring. IDK. There are so many creatively bankrupt metroidvanias out there, but I really think there's going to be something to this. (3/3)

steam deck w/ dock clears everything, nothing comes even remotely close imo. Best of both worlds
The switch and switch 2 really are the best home consoles for single player games.

More lists! And a better prompt. Relative to critical consensus & to my own time with them--beat most of these or got very close--here's the stuff that disappoints me the most:
This was a lot harder for me because there aren't many games I've played that have tremendously disappointed me to a significant degree, or that I just outright hate. I tend to avoid games I don't think I would enjoy. I put GTA3 in there but it's in reference to the entire series. GTA is probably the worst IP in the history of video games as a medium.

Jingling keys: the metroidvania. That these dull games constantly end up on lists alongside the likes of Super/Dread, SotN/OoE/Aria/Dawn, Axiom Verge 1/2, Silksong, Cave Story, etc, is so baffling to me

I clearly hit a nerve here so I'll just add: I'm glad you all enjoyed these games that sold 15+ million copies and were widely critically praised. You're in the majority!

would absolutely rec Big Walk, a superb game about hanging out, and a pretty good collaborative puzzler-social experiment to boot, thus far!

no offense to grrm he’s very talented but him wiping his hands of hotd and then the show proceeding to be the best it’s ever been is high comedy
