A very funny piece to link given that on its terms LLMs also don't process information and aren't computers

All of them are already in Lula’s coalition. Lots of outright rightists, too. Lula’s coalition is one of the broadest fronts in the history of broad fronts. And still getting crushed into minority.

Onde Lula perdeu votos entre o 1º turno de 2022 e o de 2026, e em que tipo de município? Cruzei o resultado das 5.570 cidades com dados do Censo 2022 e do PIB municipal. Dados do TSE ainda preliminares (05/10). Os principais achados, em 7 tweets.

Half of married church-goers don't report being sexually satisfied, yet 62% still have it at least weekly?!
"No group of Americans seems to be having more sex—and more satisfying sex—than married men & women who regularly attend a place of worship. In fact, we find the only Americans who have avoided the country’s “sex recession” are husbands & wives who attend religious services at least twice a month." ~ my latest @TheAtlantic w/ @grantjbailey

I’m so tired of people treating October 7th like it was fucking Srebrenica. Only 1200 Israelis were killed, hundreds of whom were soldiers! Gaza has been under nonstop siege since 2007, and on 10/7 Palestinians were able to break that siege. Why shouldn’t we defend that?

Indeed. And the « neo-vitalists » who affirm that consciousness requires biological hardware and will always remain beyond AI’s reach are equally misguided, in my opinion.
“Do not bet against the airplane. The skeptics who say AI can't conjecture, can't theorize, and can't explain are describing last spring's models. Within months, that description will no longer hold. The evidence is clear, and those with eyes can see it. Anyone who stakes their identity on "AI can't do task X" is building on sand.” Indeed.

I wrote an article about the possibility of dreaming in cephalopods. It has been published by @PioneerWorks_ in a stunningly beautiful way.

This article seems surprisingly bad?
Most of the arguments are like confused strawmen or plain incoherent and self defeating.
One of his first examples describes a student having to draw a 1 dollar bill from memory and then with the bill for reference next to her. He then argues that because she did a much better job with the reference next to her that shows we don't store memories like he imagines computers do I guess.
What he actually observes tho is that visual memory in humans is very lossy, but that also literally shows something is being stored nonetheless, because otherwise the person wouldnt be able to draw anything at all. This is just self defeating for his point that our brains don't store information.
He tries to say this is somehow different because "her brain was changed in a way that allowed her to visualise a dollar bill", but her brain being changed to enable the recollection of information, even if very lossy, is just what we mean by storage.
His 2nd baseball example is even more weird, he says that believing the brain processes information means you have to believe baseball players use some very particular method using an internal model of physics to track a falling ball, but in fact baseball players use a method which he says "is actually incredibly simple, and completely free of computations, representations and algorithms".
How is this other method "completely free of computations, representations and algorithms" doesn't make any sense and he just asserts it? The method he is describing does in fact read very much like an algorithm you could actually encode in a robot today. This just reads so incredibly confused and is self defeating in such an obvious way.
I feel like whoever wrote this is trying to argue against a weird strawman of someone that assumes the human brain is 1-1 as a desktop computer running Windows and executing programs with very simple and clear inputs / outputs and lossless memory, which no person believes.
I am guessing the point of this is to try and present counters in the recent debate over whether AI models have experiences or not, but if that's your goal sharing stuff that is this obviously wrong is not gonna achieve anything.

Anyways, yeah. Kind of unfortunate to be aligned with people who act like this, honestly. Refusing to even understand it remotely is absurd.

You are starting to see more and more examples of why “the capabilities suck!” was always an incredibly risky, short-sighted, ineffective basis for political/cultural opposition to AI. Yet it one-shotted so many people on the Left. Very sad turn of events.

Stephen kidd hammered this over & over. What's called "the poor" is not a static & clearly delineated category. In indonesia, 80% of households have similar income & every households face income (and even wealth) volatility, they move up & down the income ladder year-by-year.

David mcnally's book is bad. I am very contemptuous against a genre of writing that is mostly "marx/lenin said this exact thing I am saying & that's why i am right". Plus, mcnally addresses old thinkers & only on a philosophical level. Which is to say, boring old-fashioned tract.

Regulation can work when the problem is misaligned incentives for the firm. You can stop cheating through deterrence. But this presumes that the threat or problem is in principle under the control of the firms. In the case of the labs, it is far from obvious that a technical solution exists in the first place.
AI dominance will not belong simply to the country that builds the most powerful models fastest.
It will belong to the country whose AI the world is willing to trust.
