This is the kind of place you hear about before you ever find it! 🤍 Near Trikala, there's a church that's been sinking into the ground since a landslide in 2012 – and somehow, it's still standing. Tilted at 17 degrees, more than four times the lean of the Tower of Pisa. 🔔 This is Ropoto. Word of it has spread mostly by curiosity: traveller to traveller, photo to photo, until it became one of Thessaly's stranger landmarks. There is water under the Colosseum! Emperor Vespasian (AD 69-79) ordered the construction of the Colosseum over Nero’s private lake. Nero (AD 54-68) had probably filled the area with water from the Aqua Claudia as part of his extravagant palace, the Domus Aurea (golden house). Although it is a matter of academic debate, Emperor Vespasian’s sons and successors, Titus and Domitian, probably filled the Colosseum at least once during each of their reigns to stage naval battles (naumachia). The amphitheater also seems to have been built on fluvial soil, and excavations of the hypogeum (the underground structure of tunnels beneath the arena) in 1811 and 1874 were halted because groundwater flooded the site. In the 1930’s, under Mussolini, vast resources were employed to solve this issue. A 2020 study concluded that “four streams, now hidden by urbanization, flow toward the center of the Colosseum from the surroundings— Oppian-Esquiline hill, Caelian hill, Labicano Valley, and the Via dei Fori Imperiali.” What you see here is the channeled water of the Labicano stream. 📸 by me.
