If the £400 energy bill increases land as expected in January, it seems hugely unlikely that this government will not be forced (as the Tories were before) to return to the issue of protecting households. £100 handed out slightly erratically isn’t going to do it. 1/2 #Budget2026
Ruth Curtice from the @resfoundation: "That £100.. it will barely touch the sides of those energy bill rises.. so in January energy bills are set to be about £600 higher than they were in the year before. So huge rises in energy bills that £100 won't really touch"
John Healey boasting that in their first week in govt he & Andy Burnham recognised the cost of living by capping bus fares at £2
Except you didn't. You announced you'd be capping them in January.
Stayt: Energy bills are going up in Jan by up to £469. You're giving £100. Its not going to make enough difference
Healey: "its fair.. & honest to say there's no way that govt can offset entirely the pressures people are facing"
You could do lots more. You're choosing not to
Hannah Peaker from the @NEF explains that if you equalise capital gains tax with income tax so you tax wealth at the same rate as work, along with sorting out some of the problems with CGT, some estimates say you could raise £19.7 billion a year.
Sophy Ridge: "Burnham.. promised to end 40 years of neoliberalism.. that wasn't a budget to end 40 years of neoliberalism, right?"
John Healey: "I would say that's wrong"
Who knew you could dismantle decades of neoliberalism by making gherkins a tiny bit cheaper?
Amanda Akass "We know that energy bills are absolutely rocketing. The Resolution Foundation have come out saying even with £100 off people are still going to end up paying next yr more than they did at the hight of the problems in 2022.. will people really feel that difference?"
"In Gaza the Israeli military has been carrying out strike across the strip. [Yesterday] at least 3 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli military in the south..."
The killing hasn't stopped.
Mustafa Barghouti spells it out: the opposition zionist parties support Netanyahus policies when it comes to Palestinian issues so change won't come from within Israel. Instead it will only come about through external pressure, & thats why we in the west need to push for BDS.
"Netanyahu is a wanted war criminal.. [hes] conducted wars everywhere in the region & still the Israeli public supported him.. the world should see how far Israeli society has shifted in the direction of extremism, racism & facism. Now the Eisenkot camp is not very different"
Singh "When we've been talking about the £400 increase in energy bills which is going to come straight after xmas.. didnt the chancellor need to do more?"
Hazarika "Govts have given huge bailouts on energy & we just couldn't afford to do it"
Yes we can but Labour decided not to

Mustafa Barghouti: "The fact that Netanyahu and Smotrich and Ben-Gvir got all these votes is an indication that the Israeli public is approving their policies.. policies of settler colonialism, settler terror & fascism"
The govt is giving 4 out of 5 households a one off payment of £100 to help with rising energy costs.
But forecasts say typical annual bills could rise by as much as £469 in January.
So as Ruth from Fuel Poverty Action says, the £100 is welcome but its just going to disappear.
#GMB: the chancellor says he wants to give people breathing space, but it can be argued what he's actually done is give the govt breathing space (by not taking any big decisions & just tinkering around the edges)

Every year, £6 BILLION leaves our public services in profits for outsourcing giants.
That would pay for:
🏫 2 years of free school meals
👵 300,000 adult social care workers
🏠 30,000 council houses a year
🏥 200,000 nurses for the NHS

Moshe Feiglin: "As Hitler said, ‘I cannot live if one Jew is left.’ We can’t live here if one ‘Islamo-Nazi’ remains in Gaza"
"Every child, every baby in Gaza is an enemy"
"Delighted to preview [the budget] & what to expect we're joined by the former chancellor Sir Jeremy Hunt"
... who as a Tory cabinet minister exploited a Tory tax loophole to buy 7 luxury flats & then didn't declare what he'd done. But no mention of that, of course.

"I do support the Labour Party, not the benefits party, & Labour, the clue is in the name, its the party of work"
No, Labour was established to represent the interests of the working class, but its easy to understand why a multi millionaire company boss would rather it didn't.
