🇺🇸 Fast-food giants. UK rivers. One BIG pollution problem.
As American fast-food giants expand across the UK, demand for cheap chicken is soaring. But behind the boom lies a growing environmental crisis.
The UK’s poultry industry already produces 3.5 million tonnes of chicken waste every year. Excess nutrients can wash into our rivers, fuel algal blooms and threaten wildlife.
And now, with the Government backing the development of an industry-led Poultry Growth Plan, pressure to expand production is growing - while the pollution problem remains unresolved.
More chickens. More waste. More pollution. Our rivers cannot afford the consequences... 🧵

Will there finally be a change to the utterly ridiculous situation of the agencies knowing the cause of pollution yet watching from the sidelines and doing so little to address & stop it?
What an incredible family.

🚨 ENGLAND'S RESERVOIRS COULD RUN DRY BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
A major investigation by @thetimes has uncovered secret Government warnings of a potential 'Day Zero' water crisis, with some reservoirs at risk of running completely dry.
THIS IS A FRESHWATER EMERGENCY.
Drought, pollution, leaking pipes and years of underinvestment are putting our rivers, water supplies and future at risk.
But this crisis is solvable. With the right leadership and investment, we can turn things around.
The Government must declare a national freshwater emergency and deliver a funded plan to secure our water future.
Because if we don't act now, the UK will run dry.

WYE’S COUNCIL a new short film about the Wye Charter.
‘Wye’s Council - A Council-led River Charter’ made by Charlotte Sawyer (Rave on for the Avon) and Vey Straker (Lady Wye) especially for Councils and Councillors in other parts of the UK.

A glimpse of our Monday. We travelled from the Wye Valley to Westminster to lobby our MPs and ask them to challenge the government’s proposed Poultry Growth Strategy. This plan is being dreamed up (nightmared up 🧟♂️) by Defra and the Big Chicken lobby without community engagement

Lack of Autumn rains so far means the drought situation continues to deteriorate.
Parts of southern England now in severe drought (the highest category).
Make no mistake, a dry autumn and winter would mean big problems next year.

Pollutants that survive treatment are discharged into rivers, lakes + seas as “treated effluent”.
Chemicals that bind to solid waste can end up in the sewage sludge spread on farm fields as fertliser.

608bn litres of industrial wastewater entered sewage plants last year.
Sources include power stations, abattoirs, landfill, some with consents for chemicals such as mercury + cyanide - entering plants not designed to treat such waste.
Our new report:

🚨 Water companies have made at least £1.4 BILLION from industrial wastewater in six years.
Our investigation with @Watershed_i reveals:
💰 Water companies reported £336 million in trade-effluent revenue in 2025/26 alone, with reported revenues almost doubling since 2020/21.
🏭 607.6 billion litres of industrial wastewater was consented to enter sewage treatment works last year. That’s enough to fill around 242,000 Olympic swimming pools!
This wastewater can contain substances including PFAS, cyanide, mercury and pharmaceuticals. These chemicals enter our waterways and contaminate sewage sludge, which is spread on our land and used to grow our food.
Yet there is no independent regulator overseeing individual trade-effluent consents and no central national register.

The rapidly changing climate is having many impacts.
The hot dry summer not only led to water shortages and low rivers but also increased nutrient pollution (due to lack of dilution).
Most English rivers suffering from raised phosphates.

Air pollution from pig and poultry factory farming costs Britain over £131m a year, more than the health impacts of 3.5 million cars, concludes this investigation. Whatever the toll, it is rapidly increasing, unchecked, in the U.K and across Europe.

MORE CHICKEN. SAME OLD SH💩T.
The Government wants to expand intensive poultry farming.
Their plan for all the extra waste? Good question.. 🤔
Our rivers are already choking on chicken poo.
Expanding intensive poultry units risks making a dire situation even worse.
So as the Labour party gathers for their autumn conference in Liverpool, we’ve been outside on the streets with a simple message:
📢 Serious about cleaning up our rivers? STOP the expansion of Big Chicken
Help spread the word. Sign & share the petition and tell the Government to #StopBigChicken 👉bit.ly/4w9IRGm
