Historian of fascism here. This is an escalation of an attempt to normalize extreme violence, ritualize violence, militarize the country, and make violence entertaining so when they ask you to commit violence in their name, you will be ready.
Trump & Hegseth aren't just proposing to livestream an execution for people who want to watch.
They're proposing to broadcast a man being shot to death, even if deserved by our system, and even if you agree with this version of the death penalty, knowing that the footage will be clipped, shared, and pushed into social media feeds.
Including those of our children. The gruesome image will be everywhere.
Parents will have virtually no control over whether their kids see it. Once those images are released, there is no taking them back.
Hope all the parents in the Trump Admin are cool with that.
Mamdani: There is no explanation for these tactics. There is no explanation for federal officers firing this many rounds into a car that has a five year old in the car. Look at how many people live right here. This is a residential neighborhood. We are right here by a subway.
And the pretext of ICE is, in their words, to keep this country safe. How is it keeping everyone safe to have, as you just heard from the police commissioner, individuals wearing construction vests in masks with long guns? Residents have no idea if these are law enforcement agents, or if they are simply attacking someone on the street. And when it comes to ICE, it begs the question, what's the difference? There is no explanation for this.

Earlier today, ICE shot a New Yorker in front of a child in Marble Hill. I am keeping the victim and their family in my prayers tonight.
We need a full investigation into this shooting. We need accountability.

This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.
The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes.
Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.
To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.
this reminds me of the article in The Atlantic by Xochitl Gonzalez, in it she says “the sound of gentrification is silence”.
go to any suburb, everything looks and feels the same. Painting over stickers and art is a huge slap in the face to artists and the people that make NY.
If you walk around New York City, you’ll likely see sticker graffiti on private and public property.
Some people love seeing these stickers, some consider them art, but others like YouTuber SweetP aren’t a fan of seeing them littered on public infrastructure like mailboxes.
He has garnered a large audience online showing his process of restoring public property across the city that “seem like they’ve been forgotten”.

In an age dominated by technology, in which efficiency and profit often take precedence, it is so important that we continue to cultivate a spirit of contemplation and allow time and space for beauty. Such an attitude will greatly help humanity, especially young people, to discover the ability of art to uplift and reveal the depths of the human spirit and our openness to the divine. Contemplation presents a marvelous opportunity to encounter the God who is Beauty.
The Biden Harris Admin laid out a three phase plan to end the war in Gaza in May 2024. Harris was right to say she wasn’t going to change anything because Blinken along with other officials and territories, were working their asses off to end the war.
And the worst part: the War in Gaza is on fucking steroids. More children are being blown up. More people are dying of famine and the conflict is getting worse in that region. What could’ve been doesn’t matter to the virtue signaling population.
