Hatteras Island is cut off. Hwy 12 closed last night at Pea Island, 17 days after it reopened. Second time in 26 days. NC spent $155M on a bridge to fix the last washout. The ocean moved 4 miles north. 27 homes gone since 2020. We keep rebuilding a road on a beach that’s leaving.

Long Beach spends $ 1-1.5M a year moving the same sand back and forth across its own peninsula. It adds no new sand. It just puts it back. The dredge that actually adds sand is $11.4M for 415,000 cubic yards. The federal project feeding Huntington was $23.1M and repeats every ~5 years. Permanent fix: $ 150-350M. The city’s entire emergency reserve is $ 10.3M. Eight buildings red-tagged last weekend. So when someone posts a satellite photo and says see, the ocean isn’t rising, understand that beach is held in place with money.

Marie Wilcox, the last fluent speaker of the Wukchumni language and the dictionary she created in an effort to keep her language alive... She was the last fluent speaker of Wukchumni, a Native American language native to California. At 82, Marie Wilcox realized something that completely changed the course of her life. For centuries, her native language was passed down only through word of mouth from one generation to the next. It had never been written down in a book, recorded on paper, or saved in a digital document. That meant if Marie passed away without recording it, the language would disappear from the Earth forever. Instead of letting her heritage fade into silence, Marie decided to take action. She had no prior experience using computers or typing on a keyboard, but she did not let that stop her. She bought a basic computer and taught herself how to type, press key by key, and navigate the software. Every day, she sat down at her desk to recall words, phrases, and grammar rules from her memory. She typed out every word carefully along with its translation and meaning in English. Marie spent seven long years working on this project almost every single day. There were times when it felt overwhelming, but her devotion to her culture kept her moving forward. She once shared her heart about the project, saying, "I am just keeping it alive. I hope my people learn it." She knew that every keystroke was bringing a piece of her history back from the edge of total extinction. By the time she finished, Marie created a 6,000-word Wukchumni dictionary. It became the very first written record of the language in human history. To make sure people could actually learn how to pronounce the words correctly, she also spent hours recording audio lessons. Her daughter and grandchildren joined in her efforts, listening to her speak and learning the traditional phrases alongside her. Marie passed away in 2021 at the age of 87, but her dedicated labor made sure that Wukchumni did not die with her. Today, younger members of her tribe use her dictionary and audio files to study and speak the language of their ancestors once again. Marie's journey shows us that a language is far more than just a list of words or grammar rules. A native language carries the very soul, memory, and spiritual breath of a people. Through her deep love and quiet strength, Marie preserved a sacred spiritual bridge connecting the ancient past to the generations of the future, ensuring her ancestors' spirit remains alive forever. #archaeohistories

Newport Beach flooded two days before the storm got there. Southern California is under only its second tropical storm watch ever. The ocean was already 12 to 18 inches above normal, so high tide ran 20 inches above the charts, a record for the city. Sunday is worse.

Downtown LA has hit 90 degrees 49 times this year, the most in 150 years of records. LA sits 15 miles from the ocean. The marine layer is supposed to shut the heat down at night, and the water is now too warm to do it.

We need a WikiLeaks now.
On 20th anniversary of @WikiLeaks, recall its hopeful role brilliantly substituting for the drivel in gov’t-controlled 4th Estate. If WikiLeaks were now in full swing, we could perhaps confirm or deny alarming reports that US has given Israel the green light to nuke Iran.

One of the most beautiful berries - the joyously pink spindle berry🩷🧡🩷 They hang from thin, straight branches, once used to make spindles, hence the name🩷 In the Language of Flowers spindles mean 'your charms are engraven on my heart'📚🩷📚#folklore

The last 5 years we entered an Era of extreme ice loss in the Alps! 🧊🔥 Over this period, 20% of initial ice volume has gone! 📈 This is evidenced here on Aletsch Gl. (2,900 m asl), a place where the ice shouldn’t melt to maintain glacier in balance! ⚖️ 📷 @matthias_huss

Food waste uses almost a third of the world's agricultural land for food that is never eaten. We cut forests, use water, apply fertilizer... to grow food that rots. That's not a farming failure. That's an environmental failure.

For more than two months, I have been working on a truly horrific story about one of the gravest war crimes committed by the United States since Vietnam: The bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, Iran. It was one of the first targets struck in the opening hours of the war on February 28, 2026. At least 156 people were killed in the U.S. cruise missile strikes—120 of them were children and 26 were teachers. We spoke to survivors, first responders, parents, doctors, teachers, psychologists, and other witnesses. Some of them had never before shared their experiences of that day. It would be impossible to do justice to what happened in Minab that day with words alone. In more than 25 years in journalism and reporting on war, I do not believe I have reported on a more heinous single crime. Massacre at Minab: The School That Became a Grave dropsitenews.com/p/minab-sch… Please share this story with as many people as you can.

60 mph wind gusts, moderate to major coastal flooding and beach erosion. The sand behind me was pumped in less than 18 months ago. The 2025 project put more than 1.35 million cubic yards along these 5.6 miles, and the dredging contract alone was about $19.6 million.

Look at this. “but according to the media, the Iranians are the bad guys and the Yankees are the ones bringing democracy to Iran.”
