REPEAT AFTER ME
Local SEO is evolving again.
NAP citations still help.
Reviews still help.
Your GBP still matters.
But LLM citations are now the multiplier.
ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews are not picking random businesses.
There is a clear pattern behind who gets recommended.
Bookmark this.
What people THINK is enough
• Perfect NAP
• Clean citations
• Solid GBP
• A few backlinks
• Some reviews
All of this is still important,
but it is no longer enough by itself.
Traditional citations influence Google.
They do not influence LLMs in the same way.
What actually influences AI recommendations now
1. External listicles and roundups
ChatGPT pulls from:
• Best X in city posts
• Local roundup blogs
• Niche guides
• Third party comparisons
• Micro media directories
If multiple external sites list you,
LLMs start repeating you.
If nobody lists you,
LLMs pretend you do not exist.
This is training data, not ranking factors.
2. Recency beats authority
Fresh mentions matter more than DR.
2025 content gets cited far more than older pages.
Updating placements is required now.
3. Repetition equals truth in an LLM
The more often your business appears across the web,
the more “true” you become to AI models.
Traditional citations give credibility.
LLM listicles give discoverability.
You need both.
The new Local SEO and LLM SEO hybrid strategy
Step 1: Maintain your NAP foundation
GBP, citations, reviews and normal local SEO
Still required and still works.
Step 2: Add LLM listicle citations
Get featured in:
• Best X lists
• Local roundups
• Comparison guides
• Top 10 service in city articles
This is what LLMs ingest.
Step 3: Refresh every 3 to 6 months
Models heavily prefer fresh data.
Old mentions fade out.
This is the future of Local SEO
Traditional citations get Google’s attention.
LLM listicles get AI’s attention.
Stack both and you dominate everywhere.
I built a method to feature your business on 500 listicles across 500 websites to boost LLM visibility.

Small business owners were looking to the 2025 budget to provide critical cost relief and to improve Canada’s tax competitiveness to jump start our economy. Instead, most of the budget’s economic measures were reannouncements from 2024.
Today was a missed opportunity to provide meaningful tax relief to Canada’s employers. The government could have taken the reins by reducing the small business corporate tax rate, freeing up millions of dollars for investment in employees, technology and operations.
Government finances are a mess, but the budget just slows the growth in program spending with overall deficits above $50 billion per year as far as the eye can see. Small firms have learned the hard way that today’s deficits are tomorrow’s taxes.
Budget Concerns:
In addition to the lack of tax relief and giant fiscal deficits, many of the measures meant to stimulate the economy or insulate Canadians from the impact of tariffs appear to exclude small firms
· The $51 billion Building Communities Fund is to focus on projects using unionized labour, which would effectively exclude 90% of small businesses.
· The $1 billion Regional Tariff Response Initiative delivered by Regional Development Agencies misses the mark and excludes over half of small businesses that will be deemed too small or in the wrong sector.
· The Canadian Entrepreneur Incentive announced in budget 2024, repeated in the Fall Economic Statement and confirmed as recently as January 2025, has now been officially cancelled.
Positive Measures for Small Business Owners
There were a few wins for small business owners in today’s budget, albeit many were reannouncements from 2024.
· Government is reintroducing the Accelerated Capital Cost Allowance on most capital assets and immediate expensing provisions. The budget also extends immediate expensing to manufacturing and processing buildings. This is a sound way to improve productivity among many Canadian SMEs.
· Legislation to increase the Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption to $1.25 million has been confirmed. This is an important measure to help with small business succession plans.
· Legislation to remove income taxes from the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) for Small Business and to extend the deadline will be introduced. CFIB has also confirmed with government sources that the $623 million in CCR payments for 2024/5 will be distributed before the end of the year.
Small business confidence in the economy remains incredibly low given the massive uncertainty over tariffs from the US, China and now India. While progress was made on a few fronts, there were very few new measures that will offer immediate help for small business owners trying to keep the lights on.

Piece of advice for the person singing the 🇨🇦 anthem tonight in Toronto. Whoever you are...swallow your pride..belt out a few bars..and then hold your mic to the sky and let 42,000 sing it the way it’s meant to be sung. That would be so Canadian…and would be magic.

SEOs are being advised to “chunk” their content if they want to appear in AI answers.
But what exactly is chunking? Is it some new SEO tactic? And more importantly, does it actually work?
We break it down in our blog post: social.semrush.com/47lNBy4.

Have you thought about reducing or stopping blogging altogether?
A lot of people are because they feel it’s an old game that’s useless.
We looked at 20 companies, 10 of which decided to stop blogging over the last 12 months. And 10 who kept on blogging.
Here’s what happened to their revenue and traffic from organic (including LLMs).

I've been saying this for 17 months. The data keeps proving the same thing.
Ahrefs released a study analysing 600,000 pages. The data shows Google doesn't penalise AI content. The correlation between AI usage and rankings was 0.011. Basically zero.
This might sound familiar.
Back in April 2024, we ran the same analysis at Byword across 5,000 sites.
This was right after Google's March 2024 update, when everyone was panicking about AI content getting de-indexed. Headlines claimed sites were being wiped out for using AI.
Same result. AI content wasn't the problem.
But here's what everyone missed then (and what most are still missing now):
The sites that got hit weren't using AI wrong. They were doing content wrong.
Our data showed sites covering random topics saw a -26.4% traffic drop. While focused sites using AI actually grew 6.2%.
It was never about the tool. It was about the strategy.
The Ahrefs study confirms it again. They found 81.9% of top-ranking pages use a mix of AI and human content. Pure AI content rarely hits position one, but neither does pure human content dominate.
The pattern is clear: Google cares about quality and relevance. Not your writing process.
If you've been avoiding AI because you're scared of penalties, you've been optimising for the wrong thing.
As Ahrefs put it: "Google probably doesn't care how you made the content. It simply cares whether searchers find it helpful."
Focus your content. Serve your niche. Use whatever tools help you do that better.
The data's been showing this for 2 years.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a set of marketing practices used to increase your brand’s visibility in AI-generated answers—like Google’s AI Mode and ChatGPT responses.
Key AEO techniques include:
1. Getting positive mentions in news articles, blogs, podcasts, and other reputable publications
2. Publishing original, useful, and AI-friendly content
Many of the techniques used in traditional search engine optimization (SEO) also help with AEO, but there are some differences. Learn everything about them in our guide: social.semrush.com/48cgXkn.
