Yeahβ¦ No. Stuff like this tells me you know zero about my streams/content and my name was scraped and plugged into a not proof-read email. Didnβt even capitalize my name

Don't normally do this, but as a US practicing attorney doing corporate defense for the last 6 years, and having given grace the first time I saw this because I thought the intent was good...
I think this guide is pretty bad.
There are numerous red flags in this document, from the fact "legalities" was confused for "obligations" (not "legal obligations" as obligations can be born from a variety of different ways such as contract), to even using the Cambridge Dictionary to figure out the definition of copyright when me, my friends, and even the Supreme Court uses Black's Law Dictionary when needing to define any term not defined in statute. In this case, we CAN use the statute, 17 U.S.C. Β§ 102, which states what copyright covers and anyone can go to the U.S. Copyright Office website to learn about copyrights.
It's disingenuous to imply your legal knowledge has direct application outside of the jurisdiction in which you are licensed. The law isn't so simple that it can be boiled down like this without distorting it. I understand most Vtubers cannot afford an attorney so guides like this are tempting. However, I would 1000% still recommend you get an attorney because trying to save money "doing it yourself" can cost you way more than what an attorney will cost later.
Iβve seen some people say βthere is no vtuber communityβ in response to this video. Feel like thatβs only half-true. Vtubing has multiple communities with some only interested in Hololive, some liking exclusively indies, some being vtubers themselves, etc. but the overall βvtubing communityβ is evident from looking at your timeline and seeing trends like βvtuber vs irlβ or any other trend that happens. And with the amount of vtubers that look at the bigger named people and use their ideas or design as an influence for their own content shows an interconnectedness that is really only seen in communities like vtubing.
I think vtubing has a multitude of problems resulting in the space becoming unbearable at times; many being points brought up in this video. But that is only the tip of the iceberg. The normalization of bad actors scamming vtubers big and small, google docs for nonissues, many being βwoe is meβ about their size despite not streaming or posting clips on any platform for 6 months, artists never getting back to clients with promised commissions, sexpests, sycophants, and much much more.
If you are sick of the vtubing community because of the actions taking place in this community while engaging in that same behavior yourself, then shut the fuck up and make the change to get rid of it. This isnβt about ostracizing people or kicking people out of the community, but putting in effort to change the space you like for the better by starting with yourself. Dont engage with the bad actors; let them shout into the void. Complaining about the community and the people in it will do nothing if action is not followed up.

Iβm sure the intention is good but please be careful with guides like this. There is a lot nuance that is missing and itβs always better to talk to a lawyer licensed in your area who knows about this than to trust the guide you see online.
