Replying to @MargRev
This is not how we should proceed. I hope the authors and MR retract this based on a wide range of folks making a good case against this type of review / assessment.

Hello @elonmusk and @tylercowen , You have just decided to publicly attack our research, six days before the vote on the California billionaire wealth tax. Your attempt to discredit our work and that of our numerous academic colleagues is pathetic. Let’s take a look. 🧵

This Hoover Institution study, which has fueled the deluge of ads (more than $200 million spent by billionaires so far) to defeat the California billionaire tax, is spectacularly misleading. Let me explain its crucial flaw. 🧵
California's Billionaire Tax Act would collect roughly $30 billion. Accounting for lost income taxes from departures, the mean Net Present Value is negative $39 billion, from Benjamin Jaros and Joshua Rauh nber.org/papers/w35899
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Zucman argues that the tax will raise his projected revenue because billionaires who leave CA after 1/1/26 will be taxed anyway. At least $542B of net worth (Page, Brin, Thiel) departed the state by 12/31/25. The entire thread is a misleading denial of this fact. ft.com/content/d66976… nytimes.com/2026/04/27/us/… forbes.com/sites/forbeswe…

Hello @ericschmidt , former Google CEO: your billionaire friends are not going to be happy with you. Digging into filings with the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) from September 24 reveals an embarrassing fact — one that undermines a key part of your friends’ strategy for preserving their tax privileges🧵

Hello dear Spotify founder @MartinLorentzon There is nothing “absurd” about pointing out that Swedish billionaires like yourself pay a lower share of their income in taxes than ordinary Swedes. It is a fact. But since you question our research on the regressivity of Sweden’s tax system, allow me to explain the main conclusions of our work, the most comprehensive to date on this issue. 🧵

New work with @mariusring and @gabriel_zucman: Holding companies have become an increasingly important tool for tax avoidance among the richest households in Norway and Sweden.
New research: with @mariusring and @SeimSeim, we studied the taxes paid by the super-rich in Sweden and Norway, thinking that if some countries must do a good job of taxing billionaires, it must be them. To our surprise, we found… the opposite. 🧵 gabriel-zucman.eu/files/RSZ2…

Fantastic work by my excellent colleague David Strömberg and coauthors. When AI use rose among Chinese students, homework scores increased while exam scores plunged. @SU_Economics
Homework scores once predicted exam performance; now a new study shows those who score highest are, perversely, more likely to do worse in exams. Our charts explain the trend economist.com/graphic-detail…

New data on Swedish household wealth: total assets have tripled in 20 years. The number of euro billionaires has increased fivefold — but ordinary wage earners have also built wealth through home ownership and funds.👇t.ly/9KR7S @ollehammar Paula Roth Felicia Stokke
