Some thoughts on the elections in America, and they mean for Europe and Turkey: kulturkampftr.substack.com/p…

I see what you're saying, but it isn't efendi to "max" anything.
El Sayed and Mamdani won because they effendimaxxed. The affable Mohammedan gentilhomme. No “clapbacks”, no diasporism, no activist rants dripping with ressentiment and incivility. Affable, charismatic, large in spirit, cosmopolitan — a dash of cunning and sleaze. Effendimaxxing

The Erdoğan people are confused: should they be happy about Muslims winning elections in America, or should they be scared because Trump is losing?

America delivered
Bad news for Trump, for Musk, for Bolsonaro, for Milei, for Netanyahu, for Erdoğan. Good two weeks for democratic resilience.

Hasan Piker realized that 235,000 people were watching him live. Everything that the Republican Party and mainstream media hurled at him over the past year and a half did not pay off in the way that THEY expected. Hasan has had an incredible year. He deserves his flowers.

I agree. The word has lost its heft.
The irony in this is entirely at the expense of Che and SNL's laugh-on-cue set: nobody would laugh if they believed what was being referred to was an actual genocide.

Keep hearing about stuff like this, and it's wild.
We are getting contacted by companies that want to buy the rights to our internal operational and workflow data, including internal emails. We of course aren't going to do this, even though the offer is on its face quite lucrative, because I have no interest in helping build a future in which humans become not much more than sources of data, and maybe eventually not even that. I'm not anti-AI by any stretch, but selling a large corpus of data on how experienced and knowledgeable people think, communicate, make decisions, etc internal to organizations and in private, trusted groups so that machines can replicate those activities crosses a line for me. I hope the rest of you business owners share this conviction. Like and repost if you do.

🧵From my two-apart series on religiosity: Iran and Turkey are both experiencing rapid secularization. The common thread? Political Islam corrodes the very religious authority it claims to embody. When faith becomes a tool of state power, it loses its legitimacy as a source of public morality.

I literally coined the term "the Blob" to describe people who wanted to go to war with Iran.
Wait. What?! There’s stuff you can pin on the Blob but the Iran war damn sure ain’t one of them.

Fox: Why are you here this morning? Trump rally attendee: Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.

After October 7, the Israeli election shouldn’t be close, yet the likeliest scenario is deadlock. Bibi’s staying power is partially because of splits in the opposition, but also because many Israelis think he’s delivering what he long promised nytimes.com/2026/10/26/opini…

There was a time when people debated whether Erdoğan was a democratic leader. Nobody does anymore — not even his supporters. That doesn't mean he's illegitimate, but the form of his legitimacy has changed.

Here again, Erdoğan warning people not to engage in "street politics." He is now firmly anti-populist. nitter.cf/RTErdogan/status/21147…

funny how a few years ago, "populism" was synonymous with far-right politics. I'm glad that didn't stick.

It's one of the healthiest things there is right now.
Earnest take: I think it’s probably not healthy for the practice of democratic self-government that so many people have developed strong rooting interests in elections in countries they don’t live in.
